New World Record Set at Paralympics Day 9 Prelims

Day 9 Prelims

Day 9 Prelims got the day off to a fast start with two new Paralympic records and one new world record. Stephanie Millward of Great Britain set a new Paralympic record with a time of 30.82 in the Women’s S8 50M Freestyle. World record holder Ihar Boki of Belarus set a new Paralympic record in the Men’s S13 100M Freestyle. New World and Paralympic records were set by Jiao Cheng in the Women’s S4 50M Backstroke. Cheng swam a time of 47.68, beating the previous world record held by Liesette Teunissen of the Netherlands.

Two ties occurred in this morning’s preliminary session. In the Men’s S9 1ooM Backstroke, Patryk Biskup of Poland and James Crisp of Great Britain tied for first, swimming times of 1:05.00. In the Women’s S9 100M Backstroke, Nuria Marques Soto of Spain and Ellie Cole tied for first when they both swam times of 1:11.22. Ellie Cole is the current world record holder in this event.

Men’s S7 100M Freestyle

Great Britain’s Jonathan Fox qualified for the top seed with a time of 1:03.17. His teammate, Michael Jones also qualified for finals with a time of 1:06.06. Ukraine also had two swimmers qualify in this event. Marian Kvasnytsia and Ivengii Bogodaiko both qualified with times of 1:06.76 and 1:07.36, respectively.

Women’s S7 100M Freestyle

USA’s McKenzie Coan qualified for another final with a time of 1:09.74.  Coan has won Gold in the Women’s S7 50M Freestyle earlier in the Games. Her teammate Cortney Jordan also qualified for this event with a time of 1:14.13.

Men’s S9 100M Backstroke

The final of the Men’s S9 100M Backstroke will be a very close race. Patryk Biskup of Poland and James Crisp of Great Britain tied for the top seed. Both swam times of 1:05.00 in prelims. Just behind them was China’s Xiaobing Liu with a time of 1:05.13.

Women’s S9 100M Backstroke

There will also be a tight race in the final of this event. Nuria Marques Soto of Spain and current world record holder Ellie Cole tied in prelims when they both swam times of 1:11.22. USA’s Hannah Aspden follows them closely with a time of 1:11.78. Fellow USA swimmer Elizabeth Smith will also be competing in finals after swimming a prelims time of 1:15.06.

Men’s S8 50M Freestyle

China will send three swimmers to finals of this event. Yinan Wang finished first in prelims with a time of 26.80. His teammates Maodang Song and Guanglong Wang will also be competing after finishing with prelims times of 27.29 and 27.65, respectively.

Women’s S8 50M Freestyle

Great Britain’s Stephanie Millward set a new Paralympic record with a time of 30.82. World record holder Madison Elliot of Australia finished with a time of 30.83.

Men’s S4 50M Backstroke

Arnost Petracek of the Czech Republic qualified for the top seed with a time of 43.69. Following him into finals are China’s Yuntao Liu and Mexico’s Jesus Hernandez Hernandez with times of 44.42 and 42.49, respectively. World record holder Juan Reyes of Mexico will also be competing in this final. He qualified with a time of 45.96.

Women’s S4 50M Backstroke

China’s Jiao Cheng set new world and Paralympic records when she swam a time of 47.68. The previous world record was 48.49 held by Liesette Teunissen of the Netherlands. Following her into finals are Ukraine’s Mariia Lafina and China’s Yue Deng, with times of 51.62 and 51.94.

Men’s SM11 200M IM

Oliver Israel of Spain qualified for the top seed with a time of 2:27.67. Following him into finals are Viktor Smyrnov of Ukraine and Hryhory Zudzilau of Belarus with times of 2:31.78 and 2:34.53, respectively. World record holder Bozun Yang of China will also be competing in this final after swimming a prelims time of 2:35.11.

Women’s SM11 200M IM

Liesette Bruinsma of the Netherlands qualified for the top seed with a time of 2:54.70. Following her into finals are China’s Qing Xie with a time of 2:55.75 and Sweden’s Maja Reichard with a time of 2:55.80.

Men’s S13 100M Freestyle

World record holder Ihar Boki of Belarus qualified for the top seed with a time of 51.45, setting a new Paralympic record. Following him into finals are Maksym Veraksa of Ukraine with a time of 53.18 and Iaroslav Denysenko also of Ukraine with a time of 53.41.

Women’s S13 100M Freestyle

Great Britain’s Hannah Russel finished first in prelims with a time of 59.99. Finishing just behind her with a time of 1:00.40 was world record holder Anna Stetsenko of Ukraine. USA’s Rebecca Meyers also qualified for this final with a time of 1:01.35.

Men’s S5 50M Backstroke

World record holder Daniel Dias of Brazil took the top seed with a time of 36.46. Following him into finals are Great Britain’s Andrew Mullen with a time of 37.77 and Vietnam’s Thanh Tung Vo with a time of 39.62.

Women’s S5 50M Backstroke

Spain’s Teresa Perales qualified for the top seed with a time of 44.48. Finishing just behind her with a time of 44.49 was the Czech Republic’s Bela Trebinova with a time of 44.49. USA’s Alyssa Gialamas also qualified for finals in this event with a time of 48.65.

 

Finals will continue tonight at 4:30 PM Eastern Time
