Sophie Halper of New York City’s 92nd Street Y Flying Dolphins has verbally committed to swim for Vanderbilt University next season.
Halper is a 2014-2015 Scholastic All-American and a National Club Swimming Association qualifier. She also holds six records at her high school, Ethical Culture Fieldston Upper School. Here are her fastest times:
- 200 FR: 1:54.14
- 500 FR: 5:02.36
- 1650 FR: 17:18.96
- 200 FL: 2:09.30
The Vanderbilt Commodore women, coached by Jeremy Organ, finished twelfth at last year’s NCAA Division I Southeastern Championships. Halper doesn’t quite make it onto the Commodore ‘A’ relay with her current best times (last year’s team members split 1:51 or under in the 800 free relay), but most college freshmen see some improvement in their first year, due to an increased training intensity.
