New Zealand Dominates Day Two in the Pool of Oceania Championships

After winning three gold on the first night of the Oceania Championships, second to Australia’s six, the Kiwi’s came back to dominate the second evening of competition winning eight events.

Gabrielle Fa’ amausili and Helena Gasson both picked up their second gold medals of the competition. Fa-amausili, who won the women’s 100 backstroke by three seconds on the first night, took the 50 backstroke in a time of 29.19. Although she won the event by over half a second she was still far off her championship record of 28.77, which she put up in 2014.

Gasson won the women’s 100 freestyle posting a time of 56.49. Gasson, who won the 50 butterfly on Monday evening, finished over half a second ahead of Natasha Ramsden of Australia and teammate Carina Doyle who both hit the wall in a time of 57.11.

Andrew Trembath collected the first gold of the evening for New Zealand winning the men’s 400 IM in a time of 4:32.82 followed by teammate Blake Gun who finished in a time of 4:35.97. Brandon Schuster of Samoa was the next fastest athlete posting a national record time of 4:36.13. Schuster breaks his own record of 4:39.29, which he set at the Pacific Games last summer.

Daniel Hunter was the only swimmer to break a championship record on Tuesday evening. The Kiwi took the men’s 100 freestyle in a time of 49.49 breaking Mark Herring‘s record of 49.83, which was set in  2008.

Bronagh Ryan and Jacob Garrod both won individual gold the 100 breaststroke. Ryan took the women’s event in a time of 1:11.71 while Garrod won the men’s event in a time of 1:03.31. Bejamin Schulte of Guam finished second in a time of 1:03.46 just missing his own national record of 1:03.42, which he set at the 2015 Pacific Games.

The Kiwis finished off the night by winning two of the three relays by over five seconds. They took the 200 mixed medley relay in a time of 1:48.65 and followed that up by winning the women’s 800 freestyle relay in a time of 8:17.78.

The Aussies picked up two individual and one relay gold on Tuesday night. Alicia Wildin-Snedden, who won the women’s 200 freestyle on the first evening of the competition, took the 400 IM in a time of 4:49.84. Zac Incerti was also victorious for the second time first taking the men’s 100 backstroke on Monday evening followed by winning the 50 backstroke on Tuesday.

The Australian crushed their competition in the final event of the night winning the men’s 800 freestyle relay in a time of 7:27.19, 11 seconds ahead of the Kiwis.
