At the 2013 World Junior Championships, the top three in the 50 free were Australian Luke Percy, Russian Evgeny Sedov, and American Caeleb Dressel. The 100 free was the same three swimmers, but in order of Dressel-Percy-Sedov.
Those three, great sprinters from great sprint countries, show that swimming is rarely linear.
While Caeleb Dressel has thrived in the United States in short course, to the tune of new American Records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles, his two counterparts have faltered in the efforts to become the next great sprinter in countries known for sprinting.
Percy didn’t compete at the 2016 Australian Olympic Trials after having shoulder surgery 9 weeks ago, and now 20-year old Sedov has failed to make even the semi-finals of the 50 free, his best event, at the Russian National Championships.
Last year at the FINA World Cup in Moscow, Sedov swam a lifetime best of 21.84 in the 50 free. On Thursday in Moscow, he swam 23.17 in prelims of the 50 free and missed out on even qualifying for the semi-finals. Sedov hasn’t been that slow in any round of any meet in the 50 free since 2012.
Sedov, in 2014, shortly after the announcement of Junior World Records by FINA, swam a 21.98 in the event, that is believed to have been at the time the fastest ever done by a swimmer aged 18 or younger.
Every great swimmer has an off meet. For Sedov, it’s unfortunate that his first big one came at the Olympic Trials and his first big shot at an Olympic Team. At only 20-years old however, he’s still got time to try for several more spots if he so chooses.
Um…..Dressels 50 free of 21.53 is the fastest time for an 18&U
Feeling really disappointed for Sedov. Fellow just won European gold in December and swam 22.37 in Stockholm about a month ago. I just cannot understand what happened to him. I cannot imagine what this guy is feeling after missing home world championship in Kazan and now Rio.
50 free in Rio would miss Sedov and Cielo.
There will be dressel – no problem of missing anybody who was not ready to be ready on time
Dressel will destroy anyone out there in the 50 and 100. As long as he keeps his pace from NCAA’s he is gonna do great.
I love the fact that not only did he go 40.46 in the 100 but he dropped from a recent best of 41.07 in a short amount of time. thats a .61 drop in a few months. his times are faster than the current record holder who had a super suit!!!! Im so excited.
He will defiantly be able to impress the world come late June.
