Nic Fink Betters American Record Again En Route To 50 Breast Gold

2021 FINA SHORT COURSE SWIMMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nic Fink has done it again, resetting his own American Record in the men’s 50m breaststroke en route to winning a gold medal in the event at the 2021 SC World Championships.

Fink had already broken the American record in this event during the semi-finals of the event, swimming a time of 25.68 to clip his own record of 25.72 set during the ISL Finale earlier this month. However, during finals, Fink took advantage of a weak start from top seed Ilya Shymanovich, exploding off of the blocks to immediately get ahead of the field. Despite a late push from Italian Nicolo Martinenghi, Fink managed to hold off the field by .02 to shatter his record in time of 25.53, eclipsing his previous mark by .15.

With his performance, Fink earned his second individual gold medal of the meet as he already won the men’s 200 breaststroke earlier this week. The 2020 Olympian and UGA alum became the first American to win a world championship title in a breaststroke event since 2004 when he did so.

Fink will walk away from the meet with a total of 6 medals, including his 2 individual golds, a gold from the men’s 4×50 medley relay, two relay silvers from the mixed 4×50 medley relay and the men’s 4×100 medley relay, and an individual bronze from the men’s 100 breaststroke. His total medal haul is the highest out of all American men competing in the meet.

BIG Nic Fink fan. I do miss Andrew Wilson though. I loved rooting for the D3 swimmer, something about his story was so inspiring. If I remember correctly, he went into college a 59 100BR SCY.

He was on National Junior Team out of HS so not that under the radar!

He was in “one of the nation’s finest boarding schools” so probably had other priorities in high school besides swimming.

I don’t think Meat Day is the one pretending to be a “world class” swimmer while failing to final in any events at worlds. Stay in your lane, Hswimmer.
