Nic Fink Breaks Own American Record In 200 Breast – 2:01.60

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the final of the men’s 200 breaststroke, Nic Fink threw down a new personal best time of 2:01.60 to take silver behind Japan’s Daiya Seto. He also broke his own American Record in the event, which stood at 2:02.20. His previous record was done in 2020 during the International Swimming League (ISL) season. Fink owns all three SCM breaststroke American records.

Finke was in fourth place at the halfway point tonight, but had a huge back half to move up two spots in the final 100. Seto also took his time building his lead, as he only turned 0.03 hundredths ahead of China’s Qin Haiyang.

Split Comparison:

Nic Fink American Record – 2022 Nic Fink American Record – 2020
50 – 27.55 50 – 27.99
100 – 59.04 (31.59) 100 – 59.56 (31.57)
150 – 1:30.23 (31.19) 150 – 1:30.97 (31.41)
200 – 2:01.60 (31.37) 200 – 2:02.20 (31.23)

Finke’s strategy between the two races is pretty consistent, so there isn’t one specific place in the race that can be credited with his drop. Only his final 50 is slower than it was in 2020, and even that is by less than two tenths.

Finke’s swim breaks him into the all-time top 10 performers in the event, as he now sits at 9th fastest. His time is the  38th fastest performance ever.

All Time Top-10 Performers:

  1. Kirill Prigoda (RUS) – 2:00.16 (2018)
  2. Daiya Seto (JPN) – 2:00.35 (2022)
  3. Marco Koch (GER) – 2:00.44 (2016)
  4. Daniel Gyurta (HUN) – 2:00.48 (2014)
  5. Qin Haiyang (CHN) – 2:01.15. (2018)
  6. Arno Kamminga (NED) – 2:01.43 (2020)
  7. Michael Jamieson (GBR) – 2:01.43 (2013)
  8. Anton Chupkov (RUS) – 2:01.57 (2018)
  9. Nic Fink (USA) – 2:01.60 (2022)
  10. Anton Mckee (ISL) – 2:01.65 (2020)

Fink only has the 50 breaststroke remaining in his individual event schedule of these SC World Championships. Last year in Abu Dhabi, Fink took gold in the 50 breast (and 200 breast), and will look to defend his title in the 50. Earlier in the meet, he took gold in the 100 breaststroke, winning with a 55.88.
