When Louisville freshman Nicolas Albiero won the ACC title in the 200 fly on Saturday evening, he became not only the first-ever Louisville Cardinal to win the event since the team joined the ACC, but also the fastest 17-18 year-old swimmer in the history of the event.

Albiero won the 200 yard fly in 1:41.08, which breaks Andrew Seliskar’s 17-18 National Age Group Record of 1:41.33 set in 2014. Also in the top 5 all-time of that event are names like Tom Shields and Michael Phelps.

A comparison of splits between Albiero and Seliskar reveals something really unique and interesting about Albiero’s swim: his anchoring 26.02 50 split. That split not only pulled him from 3rd to 1st, but it blew him by the ‘record line’ that would’ve seemed out-of-reach heading into the last 50. For comparison, only one swimmer (Gunnar Bentz, 25.25) at NCAAs last year split faster on his last 50.

Albiero Seliskar
New Record Old Record
1st 50 22.94 22.13
2nd 50 26.14 26.08
3rd 50 25.98 25.82
4th 50 26.02 27.30
Total Time 1:41.08 1:41.33

Albiero, the son of Louisville head coach Arthur, won’t turn 19 until June 8th.

And talking about his father Arthur, I repeat again that he’s one of the best coaches in the world. He has transformed girls like Kelsi Worrell or Mallory Comerford from good young swimmers to international stars. He deserves to be in the discussion for US olympic coach in Tokyo.

His way of swimming that race and the splits overall could indicate that, unlike Seliskar, he could be a strong contender in long course in the future. USA seriously needs new talents at the international level in the men’s 200 fly if they want a gold medal or at least a medal in Tokyo. Congrats to Mr Albiero.

Very impressive- not just the swim itself, but it’s hard to coach your kid.

I’m hoping he has dual citizenship to represent Brazil in Tokyo!

Watched interview of both swimmer and Dad/ Coach. Seem like they are humble solid people who are making the coach / son combo work extremely well. Congrats to both !!
