British media outlets are reporting that nine swimmers on Great Britain’s Olympic swimmer roster have had their bags go missing upon arrival in Rio.
The bags, which include the swimmers’ competition kits, were en route from GBR’s holding camp in Belo Horizonte, when they were either stolen or lost in transfer. The British Olympic Association (BOA) is trying to track them down, with the competitive pool events slated to kick-off tomorrow, August 6th.
BOA said in a statement, “A small number of bags – nine from a total of nearly 3,000 pieces of luggage – are currently unaccounted for following their transfer from Belo Horizonte to the Olympic Village in Rio.”
“We are working hard to locate the bags as soon as possible. In the meantime all athletes continue to train as normal and are unaffected when it comes to training and competition wear.”
“The focus of athletes involved is very much on the start of the Games and their own performances.”
The following GBR athletes are set to compete on day 1 of the 2016 Olympic Games’ swimming competition.
Max Litchfield (400m IM), Stephen Milne (400m free), James Guy (400m free), Aimee Willmott (400m IM), Hannah Miley (400m IM), Ross Murdoch (100m breaststroke), Adam Peaty (100m breaststroke
The real news here is that ONLY 9 got lost, since almost 3000 pieces of luggage did not.
I pray they find their luggage. But, I can’t wait for the games to start so we can concentrate on the important stories.
It was the Russians!
As long as they have their phones they’ll be OK. Yes, GB athletes talking of “managing” their social media like Twitter in interviews. Good to see their priorities instead of competing.
Comp gear goes in your carry on bag kids. Coach Deb Grant (Armstead) taught us this when I swam with her in 88-89. Those 1980 Olympians are full of wisdom.
My God, prior poster is right. Keep what you need on a carry on. This is the Olympics and you check your goggles & needed gear? Total brain fart.
That’s common sense on any matter always carry your most important items with you at all times!!! This is the Olympics !!! I would’ve had 2 competition suits in my bag and googles etc just from pure paranoia of what if I actually do lose my bag . But I do hope they find their stuff.. Just silly on their behalf
It’s true that they should have one comp suit, cap, and pair of goggles in their carry ons, it’s not like they’re screwed. Every major suit company has players in Rio right now, and looking to make a good impression. Might be hard to replace a custom cap on such short notice, but that’s not necessary to race. They’ll be fine.
Omg what next rio!?
Next is More Protests by the locals who have been stolen form their rights and housing spaces .
This is why you always travel with training gear and competition gear in your carry on!
It’ was the transfer to the hotel when the bags went missing I think
why you always keep you most valuable possessions in hand
