TEMPE, Ariz.  – No. 14 Indiana battled to the very end, but No. 9 Arizona State took the final regular season matchup on its Senior Day, 12-11, at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Indiana (14-14, 1-5 MPSF) fell behind by four goals early in the first quarter but regrouped in the second to make it a two-goal deficit on an Izzy Mandema goal. Senior Tina Doherty kept the Hoosiers within striking distance on a feed from junior Zoe Crouch with 5:42 to play that hit the post and into the net.
  • Assisting on four of five goals in the first half, freshman Portia Sasser’s pass found Katherine Hawkins for the goal. But the Sun Devils (14-11, 2-4 MPSF) controlled the first half, taking an 8-5 lead at the break.
  • It was all IU in the third as it outscored ASU, 3-1, to take a one-point deficit to the fourth quarter. Hawkins, Doherty and senior Kallie White all deposited goals for the Hoosiers.
  • It was a tense finish to the end as the two teams exchanged a pair of ties and after Arizona State went up by two, Doherty’s penalty shot and Mandema’s goal down the middle kept Indiana even with 4:17 remaining. Again, the game was knotted up with back-to-back goals from ASU and IU but what proved to be the ultimate difference maker was ASU’s Bennett with 2:13 to go.
  • The Hoosiers with opportunity with 14 seconds to go but junior Lanna Debow’s shot was blocked as the buzzer sounded.
