No. 17 Indiana Earns 7-6 MPSF Victory At No. 20 SJSU

SAN JOSE, Calif.  –  No. 17 IU defeated No. 20 SJSU, 7-6, behind a hat trick from freshman Louisa Downes on Saturday afternoon at SRAC Pool.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Hoosiers (16-12, 2-4 MPSF) got on the board first thanks to a goal from senior Zoe Crouch at the 5:24 mark in the opening frame. They would build a 4-2 lead late in the first on back-to-back goals from junior Sophie Wazzan and sophomore Skylar Kidd as the Spartans kept the game within one, 4-3.
  • Each team scored a goal in the second to take a 5-4 lead at the break. Downes scored her first goal of the afternoon with 1:52 remaining before the half on a feed from senior Lanna Debow in the 6-on-5 opportunity.
  • SJSU (12-16, 0-4 MPSF) tied the game up in the third before Downes scored again on a counter goal with 3:44 left on the clock. She would follow up to complete the hat trick late in the third, giving her team a 7-5 lead headed into the fourth.
  • Indiana would hold on to the lead in the fourth, as San Jose State scored with just under six minutes to play. Graduate student goalie Mary Askew came up big late in the game with clutch saves to help seal the win.

NOTES

  • Indiana’s win on Saturday is its 16th of the season, the most for the program since 2018.
  • Downes led the way with three goals, freshman Grace Klingler, Crouch, Wazzan and Kidd all chipped in one as well.
  • Askew led the way with two assists and made nine saves while also turning in two steals.
