No Texas Hall of Fame Invite This Year; Longhorns to Swim at Minnesota Invite

The Texas Longhorns, whose men finished 1st and women finished 3rd at last season’s NCAA Championships, will take their show largely on the road during the 2021-2022 season.

The Texas men’s season will start off as it usually does with the big intrasquad Orange-White meet on September 24 at home. That will be followed by hosting Incarnate Word at the Texas Swim Center on October 8.  From there the Longhorns will hit the road, swimming at cross-state rivals Texas A&M on October 15th and then at Virginia on November 5th.

The vaunted Texas dive team will host an invite at home on November 18th-20th, while the swimmers will head off to the Minnesota invite December 1st-4th. That means that there will be no Texas Hall of Fame invite in the fall, just as in 2019. Texas said that there wasn’t any particular reason for the lack of home meets, including the Hall of Fame Invite, this season, and that it was just the way the schedule worked out. The dive squad will wrap up the calendar year with an appearance at the USA Diving Winter Nationals.

After the new year the Longhorns will resume competition on January 14 and 15th with a triangle meet against Ohio State and Kentucky at Ohio State. They will then host the TCU Horned Frogs at home January 28 and 29th, marking the end of the regular season.

The Big 12 Conference Championships, which often take place in Austin, will instead take place at West Virginia, just as they did in 2020, running February 23rd-26th. The Longhorn men have won 25-straight Big 12 titles under longtime head coach Eddie Reese, who initially announced his retirement this past spring, then changed his mind. After Big 12s, the Longhorns will host their annual American Short Course Championships, essentially a last chance meet, on March 3rd-5th. The diving team will compete at the NCAA zone D diving championships on March 7-9, then the season will wrap up with the NCAA Swimming and Division Championships at Georgia Tech March 23rd-26th.

The Longhorn women’s schedule overlaps with the men at a few key points, but otherwise they’ll have a different schedule.

They’ll get their season underway on October 8 with the “Dust Off Your Boots Invitational,” which last year took the place of the Orange-White meet as the women’s intrasquad. The schedule for the remainder of the calendar is the same as the men, and they’ll also swim at the Ohio State-Kentucky tri meet in January.

Two weeks later, the women will make an East Coast trip, swimming at NC State on January 28th and UNC the next day. The following weekend they’ll swim at Southern Methodist University, then head right back home for another new event, “The Sterkel Classic,” presumably named after US Olympic and former Texas women’s head coach Jill Sterkel. Texas said more details about that event would be forthcoming.

NC State is so scared!!! Will never be on the level of the respectable longhorns or the mighty IU Hoosiers!!!

I can’t wait for the riveting matchup for the men against Incarnate Word and the equally riveting Big 12 champs at WVU. Expecting whatever the opposite of fireworks is.

If I recall from a meet last October, Texas swimming can be pretty “riveting” no matter who they are swimming against.

IW always has a number of international swimmers that are very good. They are fun to watch.

Although less opportunity to watch them in person, mostly away games will allow freshmen to grow faster.

… that’s if the freshman gets to travel.

Each year, UT always finds a way to be weird about their schedule, whether it’s a super late release of the schedule or a lack of home meets without much explanation. I really don’t get the lack of transparency.

They are very transparent. They are giving you ahead of time all their schedule.

Ahead of time this year? Yes. In previous years? No. This is my point, always something.

Or maybe you haven’t been paying attention each year?

They probably don’t want to say that most teams didn’t want to spend money to come to Austin to get crushed. Lol

What has happened to the annual January dual with Texas and Georgia?

It was a trip where Georgia and Auburn would go to Austin or Texas would make the trip that way and visit each. Auburn dropped out and then Georgia didn’t put it on their schedule a couple of years ago.

The loss of the Texas Invite is the real tragedy. That used to be an amazing meet.

Wise decision…

Mixing a schedule’s dynamics, from year to year, keeps everything fresh and exciting.
