BOSTON – Northeastern’s Elly Morrison, Bailey Smith and Mia Thomas have been elected team captains for the 2021-22 swimming and diving season, announced by head coach Roy Coates on Monday. The three rising seniors were voted on by their teammates.
“I couldn’t be happier with the selections of Elly, Bailey and Mia as our captains for the upcoming year,” said Coates. “The team unanimously selected all three and that has never happened in my 28 years here at Northeastern. It is a true testament to their leadership, dedication and commitment to the swimming and diving program. Next year will present some unique challenges as we transition from this tumultuous year, but the coaching staff and team members are confident that these three ladies will ensure we have a successful and rewarding year.”
Morrison, a native of Maple Grove, Minn., has been one of the top divers for the Huskies, qualifying for the 2020 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships and earned 2019 CAA Rookie Diver of the Year. She ranks fifth all-time in school history on the 1-meter springboard (280.03) and sixth all-time on the 3-meter springboard (265.55).
Smith hails from Fort Plain, N.Y., and currently stands second all-time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.33), fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (55.66) and 10th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.03). She is a two-time All-CAA performer in the 200 back and ranks inside the top 10 for the 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams.
Thomas swam the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 400 individual medley (4:32.19) at the 2019 Terrier Invitational. A native of San Diego, Calif., Thomas placed 11th in the 200 fly at the 2020 CAA Championships and clocked a personal-best time of 58.18 in the 100 fly at the CAA meet.
