Northeastern Women, Dartmouth Men Capture Titles at Dartmouth Invitational

The Dartmouth men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted the Dartmouth Invitational this weekend, welcoming Connecticut College, UMass and Northeastern (women’s team) to town. The swimming was held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vermont, while the diving took place in Karl Michael Pool on the Dartmouth campus.

Women’s Meet

With UMass leading Friday night after the first session of the Dartmouth Invitational, the Big Green came out on Saturday ready for action. The Dartmouth women had many strong performances, but so did Northeastern, and in the end it was the Huskies who won the meet, by a single point.

Saturday’s meet was divided into two sessions. The 200 medley relay kicked off the morning’s racing, and already Northeastern was showing its stripes. Christine Leong (27.67), Taylor Ellis (28.40), Erica DeMunbrun (26.61), and Anna Schegoleva (24.61) won by nearly 3 seconds over UMass (Rebecca Quirie, Katie Arnott, Cassandra Sosnovich, and Ivy Durepo). Third place went to Connecticut College (Sarah Nappo, Katie Edwards, Anna Peterson, and Charlotte Nixon).

Meriza Werenski of UMass won the 400 IM with 4:29.71. Taylor Yamahata of Dartmouth (4:35.74) was second, while teammate Olivia Samson (4:38.21) got her hand to the wall just ahead of Arnott (4:38.68) of UMass.

Northeastern’s Schegoleva had a big day on Saturday, winning the 100 fly, 100 back and 200 IM. In the 100 fly, she touched out teammate Sara Touchette-McGowan, 57.15 to 57.31. Jocelyn Yuen of UMass was third with 58.65. Later Schegoleva just missed lowering her own pool record in the 100 back (57.12) when she came from behind to edge Dartmouth’s Kendese Nangle, 57.19 to 57.29. The 200 IM was another close race, with Schegoleva finishing in 2:07.85 ahead of Yuen (2:08.83), Werenski (2:08.90), and Yamahata (2:09.00).

Nangle avenged her second-place finish in the 100 back with a win in the 200. Her 2:05.94 was just enough to keep teammate Yamahata (2:06.34) at bay. Northeastern’s Leong was third with 2:08.83. Yuen, meanwhile, won the 200 fly. About a second-and-a-half back at the 100 turn, she produced two solid 32-lows to get the touch with 2:05.18 to Rebecca Butler of Dartmouth’s 2:05.74. Delaney Lanker of Northeastern (2:08.07) was third.

AnnClaire MacArt, the Dartmouth freshman who had won the 500 free on Friday night, picked up two more first-place finishes for the Big Green on Saturday with a 1:53.19 in the 200 free and 17:30.07 in the 1650. Displaying quite a solid range, she also placed third in the 100 free with 53.31. Second place in the 200 free went to Touchette-McGowan (1:55.51). In the mile, Dartmouth teammates Samson (17:46.28) and Hayley Winter (17:46.89) were right on MacArt’s hip throughout the 66 laps and ended up second and third.

Touchette-McGowan earned the top spot in the 100 free with 52.85. Dartmouth’s Charlotte Kamai (53.13) was second, just ahead of teammate MacArt (53.31). Connecticut’s Sam Pierce (53.45) out-touched Schegoleva (53.53) for fourth.

Northeastern’s Ellis won both breaststrokes, going 1:04:63 in the 100 and 2:22.57 in the 200. Both times her teammate Samira Hoesl was right on her heels. Hoesl’s 1:06.68 earned her a silver in the 100, and her 2:22.66 nearly caught Ellis in the 200. Dartmouth’s Kendall MacRae won 1-meter diving with 255.52 points, while Jacquelyn Gover of Northeastern took the 3-meter title with 265.04.

1. Northeastern University 1007

Men’s Meet

The Big Green men set the first of three pool records on Saturday with a win in the 200 medley relay. James Verhagen (23.51), Jay Schulte (26.46), David Harmon (22.34) and Ian Woon (20.59) combined for 1:32.90, putting more than 2 seconds’ distance between themselves and Connecticut’s Sean Paquette, Drake Freiberg, George Tilneac, and Michael Fothergill (1:35.23).

Logan Briggs of Dartmouth kicked off Saturday’s individual events with a 4:07.75 win in the 400 IM. Michael Glenn of UMass placed second in 4:08.20, while Dartmouth freshmen Zack Browne (4:11.53) and Henry Senkfor (4:11.75) battled for third. Browne later won the 1650 in a season-best 16:12.06, about 15 meters in front of Alessandro Bomprezzi of UMass (16:20.46).

Glenn follow up his silver in the 4IM with a pair of victories in the 100 and 200 breast, and a third in the 200 IM. Glenn (58.10) had the best back-half in the 100 breast to outpace Dartmouth’s Schulte (58.68) and Konrad Von Moltke (58.91). Connecticut’s Freiberg and Kirk Czelewicz tied for fourth with 59.23. In the 200 breast, Glenn touched in 2:05.92, ahead of Schulte (2:06.86) and Freiberg (2:09.38).

Dartmouth’s Verhagen added points to the Big Green’s efforts with wins in both the 100 back and 200 back. The current pool record-holder in the 100, Verhagen missed lowering his mark by 4/10 when he won with 50.71. Minutemen teammates Hao Luong (51.12) and Oliver Wyeth (51.30) finished second and third, respectively. In the 200, Verhagen had a much tougher battle against Luong. The pair traded stroke for stroke, with Verhagen slightly in the lead throughout the race. At the end it went in Verhagen’s favor, 1:51.34 to 1:51.67. Dartmouth’s Tony Shen was third in 1:53.97. The 100 fly was another close one, but this time for second place. First went to Dartmouth’s Harmon with a pool-record time of 49.21. Luong hung on to a slight lead at the 50 to earn a silver, out-touching Connecticut’s Loring Bowen, 51.50 to 51.72.

The third pool record fell when Dartmouth’s Woon clocked a 45.90 to win the 100 free. UMass’s Wiktor Karpinski (46.95) came in second, just ahead of Dartmouth’s Misha Tovmashenko (47.12). Connecticut College freshman Tilneac went 1:54.67 to win the 200 fly. Dartmouth teammates Browne (1:55.34) and Tate Ramsden (1:55.48) came in for a photo finish behind Tilneac.

The Big Green men competed alone in the diving events. Taylor Clough racked up 303.45 points to win the 1-meter event while Brett Gillis scored 336.15 to claim the 3-meter title.
