MARQUETTE, Mich. – Both the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s swim & dive teams swept St. Cloud State University and Davenport University in a double-dual meet in Marquette while Ondrej Zach set a new PEIF Pool record in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle.

RECORD BREAKER

In the fourth event of Saturday, Zach posted a winning time of 9:15.16 to break the PEIF pool record in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle.

FRIDAY RELAYS

The Wildcats won all but one of the races in the Friday evening relay portion of the meet. In the mixed 400-yard butterfly relay the NMU team of Meritxell Font CantareroMichaela NelsonRyan Lund, and Ezra Billings took first with a time of 3:37.91.

In the fourth event of Saturday, Zach posted a winning time of 9:15.16 to break the PEIF pool record in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle.

In the mixed 400-yard backstroke relay the Wildcats were victorious again as Erikas KapociusHeidi BillingsCamilla Carbone, and Thibault Auger combined for a finish in 3:37.12.

The final Friday win for NMU was in the mixed 400-yard breaststroke relay. Freddie Deweese, Zoe DeKievitElla Houwers, and Roberto Camera won with a time of 4:10.50.

STRONG SATURDAY

The first races of Saturday were the 200-yard medley relays, which were swept by the Wildcat teams. The winning relay for the women, consisting of Billings, DeKievit, Font Cantarero, and Becca Burrows won with a time of 1:46.93.

The men’s team finished first in 1:32.49 and featured Auger, Camera, Lund, and Billings.

WINNING MULTIPLE

Seven NMU swimmers collected at least two individual victories each.

On the men’s side, Roberto Camera picked up victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.41) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.07). Junior Erikas Kapocius touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.37) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.80).

Outside of his record-breaking win in the 1000-yard freestyle, Ondrej Zach won the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.27).

For the women, Meritxell Font Cantarero touched first in both the 100-yard butterfly (57.98) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.78). Becca Burrows also doubled up with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.65) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.66).

Another woman for the Wildcat team earned multiple wins in Heidi Billings. The freshman won the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.58) as well as the 100-yard backstroke (56.93) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.47).

DIVE TIME

Junior Ryan Leach swept the men’s diving events. He posted a score of 239.77 to win at the 1-meter dive. Leach then scored 240.67 to capture first place in the 3-meter dive.

INDIVIDUAL VICTORIES

Two Wildcats each notched one individual win with one on the men’s side and the other on the women’s. Zoe DeKievit of the women’s team won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.80 while Ezra Billings won the men’s 50-yard freestyle in 20.98.

WINS TO END

The meet closed with two NMU relay wins.

It was a win for the women in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of Donna Hannig, Burrows, Houwers, and Nelson finished in a time of 1:38.55.

The men won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.38 thanks to the team of Martin WolmaransEzra Billings, Camera, and Ivan Amillo Escobedo.

TEAM SCORES

As a team, the Wildcats picked up four victories thanks to the double-dual format. The NMU men defeated SCSU by a score of 178-116 while the women defeated the Huskies 171-121. The’ Cats also defeated DU on the men’s side 181-98 and 168-124 on the women’s.

UP NEXT

The Wildcats take a short break from the competition pool before returning to action on Friday, October 29 to face Grand Valley State University and Saturday, October 30 to take on Saginaw Valley State University. Both meets see NMU on the road.

MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Cloud State Swim & Dive wrapped up their first weekend of regular season of action on Saturday, as the Huskies competed in a Co-ed relay meet on Friday and a tri-meet on Saturday against Northern Michigan and Davenport in Marquette, Mich. Sophomore Raf Hendriks (Berg en Terblijt, Netherlands) provided the highlight of the meet for the Huskies, as he set the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday with a time of 1:48.25.

TEAM SCORES

On Friday, the Huskies beat Davenport, 204.00-148.00, and lost to Northern Michigan, 200.00-170.00 in a co-ed relay meet. Each team had two males and two females on each relay team.

On Saturday, the Huskies men beat Davenport, 177.00-116.00, and lost to Northern Michigan, 178.00-116.00, while the women beat Davenport 150.00-149.00 and lost to Northern Michigan, 171.00-121.00.

TOP HUSKIES

  • Hendriks posted the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.25 and finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.07.
  • The Huskies men relay team of junior Abe Townley (White Bear Lake, Minn.), senior Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kan.), sophomore Jacob Swier (Parker, Colo.) and freshman Will Bennett (Ankeny, Iowa) finished first in the 200-yard freestlye relay with a time of 1:26.57.
  • For the women, graduate senior Annaliesa Anderson (West Bend, Wis.) and junior Meredith Matchinsky (St. Cloud, Minn.) each performed well in diving events. Anderson finished first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 247.57 and 235.37, respectively, while Matchinsky finished second and third with scores of 243.53 and 226.15, respectively.

UP NEXT

Next, the Huskies will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a tri-meet against Augustana and Sioux Falls on Oct. 15-16.
