Northwestern won 3 of the 4 relays on day 1 of the TYR Invitational. In the women’s 200 free relay, Calypso Sheridan (22.38), Maddie Smith (22.32), Malorie Han (22.72), and Nicole Aarts (22.31) combined for a Pool Record 1:29.73. Sheridan and Smith also teamed up with Hannah Brunzell and Miriam Guevara to win the women’s 400 medley relay. Sheridan led off in 52.04, and was followed by 59.37 from Brunzell, 52.66 from Guevara, and 49.73 from Smith. Their final time of 3:33.80 was a season best and another Pool Record.

Northwestern’s men also won the 400 medley relay in 3:13.54. Manuel Martos led off in 47.56, with Kevin Houseman on breast (53.38), Ezra Mizgala on fly (48.70), and Andrew Zhang anchoring in 43.90. UNLV won the men’s 200 free relay, posting a 1:21.27. That relay was made up by Ogi Maric (20.60), Sean Gage (19.99), Michal Cukanow (20.27), and Richard Szilagyi (20.41).

Izzy Jones picked up a win for Toledo in the women’s 500 free, swimming a 4:46.89 to post the top time in the Mid-American Conference this year. Jones nearly even-split the race, swimming a 2:22.10 on the front half, and 2:24.79 on the back half. Hayden Hemmens (UNLV) won the men’s 500 free in 4:23.52, besting the field by nearly 2 seconds.

Hannah Brunzell went on to win the 200 IM in a personal best of 1:59.06, thanks to a speedy 33.52 on the breast leg. Fellow NU freshman Ally Larson was 2nd in the race, finishing in a season best of 1:59.92. Northwestern also won the men’s 200 IM, where Henry Blaul swam a 1:47.39. Blaul won a tight race with Simon Fraser’s Collyn Gagne and NU teammate Ryan Gridley. The difference-maker for Blaul was a field-leading 30.42 on the breast leg. Gagne out-split Blaul on the free leg, but ultimately fell short with a final time of 1:47.65. Gridley roared home in 24.83, also falling short in 1:47.86.

Calypso Sheridan went on to win the 50 free in a personal best and Pool Record of 22.23, also leading a 1-2-3 charge by the Wildcats. Maddie Smith was next in, swimming a 22.66, and Nicole Aarts clocked a 23.04 for 3rd. Forrest Beesley won the men’s 50 free in 20.25.
