Notre Dame Women Dominate at 2016 Shamrock Invitational

The two-day annual Shamrock Invitational took place this past weekend, Jan.29-Jan.30 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend.

Women’s Final Scores:

The Notre Dame women had numerous 1-2-3 finishes throughout the meet, racking up valuable points for the Fighting Irish. In the 500-yard free, it was Ella Moynihan who took the victory in 4:55.07, behind her were teammates Alice Treuth (4:59.30) and Molly Treble (5:01.53). The next event where the Fighting Irish the top 3 finishes was the 1m diving, where Emma Gaboury (284.65) finished 1st, Lindsey Streepey (276.30) 2nd and Annie Crea (275.30) 3rd. In the 100-yard fly it was Tayde Revilak who finished 1st in 54.95, ahead of teammates Catherine Galletti (55.93) and Nicole Smith (56.06). Smith then went on to take the victory in the 200 fly, winning in a time of 2:02.06, more than a second ahead of the field.

The Irish went on to have a historic senior day, breaking the 2-year old record in the 400 free relay. The team of Catherine Mulquin, Moynihan, Galletti and Revilak clocked in in 3:20.29, knocking almost a second off of the previous record of 3:21.16. The same relay team also won the 200 free relay, finishing in 1:30.53. Moynihan went on to win another individual event, touching 1st in the 200 free in 1:51.35. Mulquin also went on to be an individual winner, finishing the 100 free in 50.42, just ahead of Grand Canyon’s Jovanna Koens (50.74). In the 50 free, it was Koens who took the victory (23.14), just edging out Mulquin at the touch (23.15).

Emma Sougstad of the Hawkeyes had an impressive meet, winning 3 individual events, the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast in times of 2:02.91, 1:01.64 and 2:15.42 respectively.

Grand Canyon’s double winner of the meet was Estela Davis Ortiz winning both the 200 back (1:58.11) and the 100 back (55.13) events. She also placed 2nd in the 400 IM (4:24.81), finishing behind Notre Dame’s Katie Miller, who won the event in 4:23.91.

The Irish took another two victories in both the 400 and 200 medley relays. The A team of Mulquin, Danielle Margheret, Galletti and Moynihan touched the pads in the 400 IM relay in 3:43.47. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Mulquin, Margheret, Galletti and Revilak clocked in in 1:42.41.

On the men’s side of racing, the Grand Canyon Lopes posted impressive results throughout the meet. Mark Nikolaev was a 4-time individual winner, winning the 200 IM (1:47.41), the 100 fly (47.35), the 100 back (46.33) and the 200 back (1:47.16). His 200 IM and 100 backstroke times were not only personal best but also new school records. His 100 backstroke was an even more stand-out swim, as he posted the 13th fastest time Division I time this season and broke Matt Grevers‘s previous pool record.

Missouri State posted a 1-2 finish in the 500 free, with Miguel Davila finishing 1st in 4:26.95, ahead of teammate Minki Kang (4:29.85). The duo went on to post another 1-2 finish in the 1650 free, with Davila touching in 15:27.41 and Kang touching in 15:33.27. Davila also went on to win his 3rd individual event, touching the pads in the 400 IM in 3:58.77. Their teammate Arthur Osvath took the victory in the 200 breast (1:59.98), touching just ahead of Iowa’s Roman Trussov (2:00.21) who finished 2nd in this event, but took first in the 100 breast (54.83).

On the men’s 1m boards, Iowa took a 1-2-3 finish with Will Brenner 1st (327.10), Addison Boschuit 2nd (308.80) and Heffner Brandis 3rd (301.35). On the 3m, it was Michael Bidak of the Lopes who won the event with a score of 335.20, and Boschuit 2nd with 320.65 points.

50 free & 100 free: Grand Canyon’s Mazen El Kamash (20.12)

400 medley relay: Grand Canyon’s Nikolaev, El Kamash, Daniil Antipov and Jacob Lambros (3:14.19)

200 medley relay: Nikolaev, Youssef El KamashIllya Glazunov and El Kamash (1:27.67)

200 free: Notre Dame’s Trent Jackson (1:40.00)

800 free relay: Lambros, El Kamash, Iegor Lytvenok and Antipov (6:37.37)

200 fly: Antipov (1:47.63)

400 free relay: Nikolaev, Glazunov, Lytvenok and El Kamash (2:55.21)
