NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A fast night in the water from both the men’s and women’s squads led the University of Notre Dame swimming and diving team to a Friday sweep at the annual Dennis Stark Relays inside the Rolfs Aquatics Center.
The Notre Dame women’s team claimed first place with 154 points to distance themselves from meet runner-up Bowling Green (98 points). The Irish men also secured 154 points to race past Oakland (90 points) to the top of the podium.
“It was fun to swim together,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Litzinger said. “We set a couple of meet records, especially on the women’s side I think we broke three of the meet records, and we gave our new people a chance to shine. Our men also showed some really nice depth today. I’m pleased with how everything went.”
Notre Dame entries swept first place in each of the 22 swimming and diving events held during the annual relay meet. The Irish women established meet records in the 3×100 butterfly, 3×100 breaststroke and 4×100 medley relay events.
Erin Sheehan, Sofia Revilak and Nicole Smithcomprised the victorious and record setting Notre Dame 3×100 fly squad with a time of 2:47.16.Meaghan O’Donnell, Sherri McIntee and Smith tapped the wall with the fastest 3×100 breast time in meet history at 3:13.17. Catherine Mulquin, Danielle Margheret, Revilak and Abbie Dolan closed the record book rewriting with a time of 3:44.13 in the 4×100 medley.
The Notre Dame swimming and diving team returns to the Rolfs Aquatic Center for a pair of dual meets on Saturday at 11 a.m. (ET). The Irish men will face Oakland in the traditional dual format, while the women’s squad will compete against Indiana State.
“The whole point of having back-to-back meets is to simulate what we’re going to face in November when we go to the Greensboro Invite, and then ACCs and NCAAs,” Litzinger said. “Perform at night, warm up, step up, swim fast in the morning, that’s the whole point of doing this. This is an exercise and we have to keep practicing it to be great at the end of the year.”
