Prior to Wednesday night’s finals session at the 2021 ACC Championships, several swimmers elected to time trial events. Although there were no new NCAA A-cuts to come out of the session, there was one NCAA B-cut.

The highlight of the session came via Norte Dame’s Zach Smith in the 200 butterfly. Swimming alone in the event, Smith posted a lifetime best of 1:42.57, improving his standing as the second-fastest performer in school history. In addition, Smith’s time now puts him within range of an NCAA invite. In 2020, the standard for an invite was a 1:42.52, but this year’s standard may be slightly slower due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in multiple teams and individuals taking the year-off from competition.

Smith will have another shot at the 200 butterfly on Saturday. He is currently seeded 13th overall going into the event, with Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov holding the top seed with his time of 1:41.73.

Georgia Tech sophomore Daniel Kertesz also posted a best time during the session. In the 200 freestyle, Kertesz posted a time of 1:37.60, taking .09 off of his best time of 1:37.69. Kertesz is currently slated to swim the event again tomorrow, going into the event seeded 34th overall with his previous best. With his new time, he would be ranked 33rd overall.
