While competing in the morning session of day 2 of the 2019 Swim England Winter Championships, teenage dynamo Jacob Whittle busted out a new British Junior Record in the men’s 100m freestyle. During this morning’s heats at Ponds Forge, 15-year-old Whittle produced a quick 100m free outing of 49.05 to claim the 5th seed for tonight’s final in Sheffield.
Splitting 24.22/24.83, Whittle’s time this morning not only overtook his own previous personal best of 49.53 set just this past November, but it also establishes a new British Junior Record in the event. The old mark of 49.38 was held by Matt Richards, the speedster who became this year’s European Junior champion in the long course version of the 100m free event.
Heading into the 2019 short course season, Whittle, who turned 15 just this past September, had never been under the 50-second threshold. His remarkable time drops include going from 50.79 in November 2018, to 50.35 in October of this year, to the aforementioned 49.53 he put up at the Midlands Winter Short Course Championships.
Whittle is the heard-turning dynamo who broke the 50-second barrier in the long course 100m free event as just a 14-year-old.
We’ll see if teen Whittle has more left in the tank for tonight’s final.
I’m sorry 24.2/24.8?!?!
His starts are the anti-Dressel. As he fills out and stops growing so fast he’ll become more explosive and iron out those details in a body that isn’t constantly changing on him.
His actual swimming is incredible though and he still has lots of improvement room in that too.
His start made me wince – Not his fault as you say, he’ll grow in to his frame and it’ll come together; What a talent though. Never seen a lad his age swim the way he does.
Wait, are you saying he broke the 50 sec barrier in LCM before he did in SCM?
Yeah he did
That is shockingly well split
What’s the US NAG for a 15 year old?
