Numerous National Records Fall On Day 1 Of SC Worlds

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Along with the national records of larger nations broken, such as Kylie Masse and Taylor Ruck of Canada in the 100 back and 200 free, and Lilly King of the United States in the 50 breast, there were also many other smaller nations records broken.

There were two Vietnamese records broken, as Paul Le Nguyen broke the national record in the men’s 100 back in 52.57, and Anh Vien Nguyen broke the women’s 400 IM record in 4:32.19. She broke her own record of 4:34.49 set at the 2014 Championships. She would have broken it again at finals, as she touched 2nd in 4:27.12, but was disqualified for not touching on her back at the 200m wall.

Venezuela’s Carlos Claverie broke the national record in the 100 breast prelims, clocking a time of 57.81. He was a bit off that time in the semi-finals tonight, going 58.22 for 15th place.

Isabella Arcila of Colombia cracked the record in the women’s 100 back, clocking 58.30 in the prelims to eclipse the old record of 58.60 held by Carolina Colorado Henao.

In the men’s 200 IM, two records fell as Mark Szaranek broke the Scottish national record and Andreas Vazaios broke the Greek record. Szaranek swam to a time of 1:53.77 in the prelims, well under Dan Wallace‘s mark of 1:55.18. Vazaios broke his old record of 1:54.37 in 1:54.30. Both men qualified for the final, but were unable to match their prelim times and finished 6th and 8th respectively.

Another Scottish record went down this morning as Kathleen Dawson broke her own 100 back record in 57.17. She broke it again tonight, clocking 57.03 to qualify 7th for tomorrow’s final.
