NY State Champion Ming Xu Commits to Cornell

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Brighton High School senior Ming Xu has verbally committed to the academic application process at Cornell University for the women’s swimming and diving team.

I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to Cornell University to continue my athletic and academic studies! Thank you to all my coaches, friends, and family who have supported me through my swimming career and always cheered me on. GO BIG RED‼️❤️🐻”

At the New York girls’ state championships (for schools with 500-964 students), Xu won the 100 fly and the 100 back. She also placed 5th in the 100 fly and 100 back at the NYS Federation Swimming Championships.

Xu also competes for the Webster BlueFins. At the 2022 Speedo Sectional Championship in Buffalo, she placed 7th in the 100m back and 15th in the 50m free. She also competed in the 2022 Futures Championships in Geneva, Ohio, where she participate din the 100m back, 50m free, and 100m fly.

Xu has 2023 USA Swimming Futures cuts in the 50 free and 100 fly.

Best short-course yards times:

  • 50 free: 23.55
  • 100 back: 55.85
  • 100 fly: 55.30

Cornell is a member of the Ivy League. At the 2022 women’s Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships, Cornell finished 8th out of 8 teams. With her best times, Xu would’ve been able to make the B final of the 100 back and the C final of the 50 free and 100 fly.

In the 100 back, Xu already competes with Cornell’s top swimmers. The top time for the team so far this season in the event is current senior Aviva Munoz’s 55.79, which is just a few hundredths faster than Xu’s best time. Xu also would have the third-fastest time in the 100 fly this season.

Xu’s commitment would also help offset the upperclassmen-heavy backstroke program. All but one swimmer who lists back as one of their strokes (freshman Ella Martinez) are upperclassmen. In contrast, multiple current freshmen list fly as one of their strokes, so Xu’s strengths might lie best with the backstroke team.

So far for the class of 2027, Xu joins fellow New Yorkers Katie Yee and Erin DeHollander. Yee competes in fly and IM events, while DeHollander is more of a breaststroker and freestyler.
