Oklahoma Baptist Men, Women Dominate Day 1 of NAIA National Championships

Anne Lepesant is on deck covering the NAIA National Championships all week.

Women 1M Diving

Four of the six divers were from Oklahoma Baptist. Led by Kriste Brimage, the Lady Bison swept the first 4 spots, scoring big for OBU.

Cumberlands was 5th and Berea was 6th.

Men 3M Diving

Illinois Tech’s Ian McNair led the 5 men in the 3M competition. OBU scored 2nd, 4th, and 5th. Concordia took 3rd.

200 MR

Top seed Oklahoma Baptist completely reconfigured their relay for finals [Lisa MacManus (25.90), Kerryn Mullin (28.76), Laura Galatza (24.28) and Emma Forbes-Milne (22.70)] dropping 4.5 seconds to win in 1:41.64. They just missed beating the NAIA record of 1:41.40 set in 2012 by Fresno Pacific. SCAD’s Hannah Legg, Claire Partlow, Kelsey Bobzien and Haley Thompson just made it into second with 1:45.90, while Cumberlands’ Lizzy Horn, Kaleigh Botill, Charlotte Parent and Melissa Peplinski finished third, setting a school record with their 1:46.19.

OBU’s Daniel Ramirez (21.95), Greg Penny (24.75), Garland Sullivan (21.28) and Logan Lassley (19.68) finished first and set a NAIA meet record with a 1:27.66. SCAD’s Ryan Searles, Marc Fleischmann, Mark Shvartsman and Sean Sloat finished second with a school record of 1:30.95. Union’s Louis Glavinos Jr., Vinicius Rossi, Travis Strachan and Jeff Snider crushed their school’s record, placing third in 1:31.85.

500 Free

OBU’s Nicole Wilson led wire to wire, winning in 4:59.02. SCAD’s Emma McKinley took second in 5:02.93, while Olivet Nazarene’s Samantha Elam destroyed her school’s record (by 12 seconds) with her third-place finish of 5:03.25.

Olivet Nazarene’s Andrew Fischer won the men’s race with a 4:32.93 followed by OBU teammates Javier Sossa (4:35.91) and Andrew Nelson (4:36.19).

200 IM

The women’s 200 IM was exciting from start to finish. The lead changed several times but Cumberlands’ Charlotte Parent finished strong, just touching out Brenau’s Hannah Boudreaux, 2:05.30 to 2:05.37, for the win. Parent and Boudreaux each lowered their own school records with those swims. Biola’s Christina Tixier took home third place in 2:06.36.

OBU dominated the men’s 200-yard IM with a 1-2-3 finish. Daniel Ramirez won in 1:50.19. Teammates Maximilian Abreu (1:50.55) and Gill Cantrelle (1:50.64) took second and third.

50 Free

OBU dominated the women’s 50 free, with a 1-2-3 sweep. Laura Galarza won in 22.99, while Emma Forbes-Milne (23.15), Lisa MacManus (23.42) rounded off the podium.

OBU took the top 3 spots in the men’s race as well. Nick Schuttinger took down the NAIA record with a 19.83, beating the 19.90 set by Russell Thompson of Cal Baptist in 2007. OBU’s Logan Lassley (20.01) and Garland Sullivan (20.44) finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

800 Free Relay

OBU’s Nicole Wilson (1:50.79), Laura Galarza (1:52.14), Lexie Keller (1:53.85) and Michelle Glass (1:58.18) won the final event of the night in a 7:34.96. SCAD’s Hannah Legg, Haley Thompson, Claire Partlow and Emma McKinley finished second in 7:39.20, setting a school record. Brenau’s Michelle Billeaud, Meredith Barrington, Mary Katherine Jabbia and Hannah Boudreaux took third in 7:48.05, also setting their school’s record.

OBU’s Nick Schuttinger (1:36.87), Javier Sossa (1:41.65), Andrew Nelson (1:41.09) and Maximiliano Abreu (1:40.87) handily won the men’s race in 6:40.48, missing the NAIA record by 1.7 seconds. SCAD’s Mark Shvartsman, Ryan Searles, Sean Sloat and Pat Cardillo took second in 6:44.57, setting their school’s record. Olivet Nazarene’s Andrew Fischer, Simon Pheasant, Sam Borgman and Bradley Adamson crushed their school record, by 17 seconds, and placed third in 6:51.60.
