Wright State kicked off the 2016 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships with a win in the women’s 200 medley relay, notching a conference, meet, and pool record with their 1:39.96 from Sofia Aledo Carmona (25.54), Kayla Fearrin (28.30), Emily Hayhow (23.75), and Samantha Miller (22.37). Their combine 1:39.96 edged Oakland by a half-second and Milwaukee by .23.
The men’s 200 medley relay went to Cleveland State, in a conference, meet, and pool record of 1:26.05. Philipp Sikatzki (21.18), Tommi Wolst (24.26), Szymon Golczyk (20.53), and Declan McLaughlin (20.08) contributed to the Vikings’ win. Oakland finished just .05 back in second, while Wright State took third in 1:28.72.
The Golden Grizzlies put two men on the podium in 3-meter diving, with Stirling Fordham getting the win with 331.65 points and Joe Smith picking up a third- place finish with 303.85. Illinois-Chicago’s Tyler Pastore came in second with 306.00.
Oakland women cruised to a 7:17.13 win in the 800 free relay, setting conference, meet, and pool records. Nikki Flynn (1:47.77), Alysse Fischer (1:50.04), Arynn de Leeuw (1:51.36), and Patricia Aschan (1:47.96) made up the quartet. Milwaukee came to the wall in 7:23.62; Youngstown State took third with 7:27.56.
The Golden Grizzlies also set championship and League records in the men’s 800 free relay, as Tuomas Kiviluoma (1:37.26), Jacob Pearson (1:37.89), Andrew Binder (1:38.12), and Devon Nowicki (1:35.83) combined for 6:29.10. Wright State (6:32.41) took second ahead of Cleveland State (6:34.58).
