RESULTS

The second day of the 2023 Zippy Invite is in the books. The day, which featured the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay, women’s 3-meter diving, and men’s 1-meter diving, was defined by some downright impressive meet records.

One of the top swims of the day came from Oakland University junior Jonas Cantrell, who popped a sizzling 4:18.47 to win the men’s 500 free. Cantrell’s swim marks a huge personal best, as his previous best was a 4:21.99, which he swam at the 2022 Horizon League Championships when he was a freshman. He also shattered the meet record and pool record with the performance.

Akron’s Abby Daniel was another record breaker on the day, tearing to victory in the women’s 200 IM in a time of 1:56.78. It was a big mid-season swim for Daniel, who holds a career best of 1:56.26 in the event, a time which she swam at the MAC Championships in February of this year. She swam a very well rounded race, splitting 25.17 on fly, 29.50 on back, 34.01 on breast, and 28.10 on free.

The Zips were exceptional in the women’s 200 IM, taking the top 4 spots. Weronika Gorecka came in 2nd with a 1:58.40, while Rebecca Reid was right behind with a 1:58.54 for 3rd, and Rachel Sabotin came in 4th at 1:59.75.

Abby Daniel wasn’t satisfied with winning just one event on the day, however. She was back in action in the women’s 50 free, which she put up a 22.73 to win. Once again, she was close to her career mark in the event, which is a 22.43 that she swam leading off the 200 free relay at the MAC Championships in February.

Daniel would then go on to help the Zips win the women’s 400 medley relay and break the meet record in the process. Maddy Gatrall (52.56), Madeline Dyer (1:01.39), Daniel (51.49), and Rebecca Reid (48.78) combined for a 3:34.22, setting a new meet record. Impressively, Akron had the 2nd-fastest relay in the field as well. Their 2nd team of Weronika Gorecka (52.74), Sara Bozso (1:01.34), Rachel Sabotin (52.82), Aislinn Holder (50.55) teamed up for a 3:37.45.

Oakland picked up a win in the men’s 50 free, where Christian Bart clocked a 19.92. The Golden Grizzlies would have two men go under 20 seconds in the event, as Charlie Brown tied for 2nd with UC Santa Barbara’s Matt Driscoll. Both men clocked 19.98s.

Cornell’s Paige Dacosta took the men’s 200 IM in 1:45.16. Dacosta was excellent on the back half, splitting 30.60 on breast and 24.43 on free, for a 55.03 on the 2nd 100. He was out in 23.91 on fly and split 26.22 on back, getting out in 50.13 on the first 100.

UCSB had a great day as well. Annie Andres kicked the session off with a win in the women’s 500 free, clocking a 4:51.44. She was right with the field halfway through the race, then broke away on the back half to pull into the lead.

UCSB also won the men’s 400 medley relay, seeing Matt Driscoll (46.86), Corban McIntosh (53.31), Zachary Tamusaitis (46.78), and Austin Sparrow (42.83) combined for a 3:09.78. Oakland came in 2nd with a 3:10.69 but was helped greatly by a 51.75 breast split out of Christian Bart.
