O’Brien Sets New Irish Record at Ulster International

Shauna O’Brien set a new Irish senior record in the women’s 50 butterfly on the second day of the Dave McCullagh Memorial Meet/Ulster International in Bangor.

O’Brien took the event in a time of 27.10 breaking Melanie Houghton‘s 2014 record of 27.33. O’Brien did not only set a new Irish mark in the event, but her time was also under the World University Games qualifying standard.

She was not the only swimmer to punch a ticket to Gwangju, South Korea. Jordan Sloan qualified in the men’s 200 freestyle winning the event in a time of 1:49.63.

Yesterday the 15 year old Connor Ferguson set a new Irish age group mark in the 50 backstroke and today he returned to the pool to break the 100 backstroke record twice. In the prelims Ferguson posted a 56.46 to break Karl Burdis‘ 2008 record and in the final won the event in a time of 56.36.

With that time Ferguson qualified for the European Youth Olympic Festival and the World Junior Swimming Championships.

Antoinette Neamt qualified for the European Youth Olympic Festival winning the women’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:51.70.

The men’s 200 breaststroke was one of the evening’s most exciting races as Ross Murdoch and Nicholas Quinn battled for the gold. Murdoch finished 27 one-hundredths of a second ahead of Quinn winning the event in a time of 2:14.46. Quinn finished second in a time of 2:14.73.

There were also three athletes who qualified for the European Games which included; Danielle Hill (100 backstroke), Rebecca Reid (200 freestyle) and Mona McSharry (200 breaststroke).
