Oceania Report, Day 3, Emily Seebohm Finishes Second in the 100 Backstroke

The night started off great for Australian, Emily Seebohm. After scratching the finals of the 2oo IM, some questioned why she would scratch the event. She made it very clear today that her focus was on the 100 backstroke. Seebohm raced to the wall in 59.06 to earn the Silver medal. She has looked really good the whole meet, and should do well in her 50m backstroke. In the final today, she was third to the wall in 29.05. She was the silver medalist in London last summer and was just off of her time from a year ago. That is very impressive considering it is a post Olympic year and many athletes have a hard time getting back down to their Olympic Times.

Lauren Boyle of New Zealand had a great performance in the women’s 1500 freestyle. Boyle swam a 15:44.71. She finished in their place, earning the bronze medal. This is her second medal from the meet. She dropped over 30 seconds from her seed time, showing the world how much potential she has. This was her first time swimming the 1500m at a major championship. In the first half of the race, she had a great race with Mireia Belmonte of Spain. She was able to hold her off and full ahead to win the medal. Katie Ledecky and Lotte Friis were the two that finished ahead of her, were several seconds under Kate Ziegler’s World Record. Boyle finished about 2 seconds away from the former World Record  time.

Thoughts:

  • Australia is in third in the overall medal count for swimming.
  • New Zealand is in 14th in the overall medal count for swimming.
  • Can Christian Sprenger win another medal in the 50 breaststroke?
  • Kylie Palmer went 1:57.68 in the London Olympic final to finish in 8th place. At the time, her best 200 was a 1:56.05. Can she hold her swim together and drop in finals this year?

Records:

  • Lauren Boyle (1500 National Record) Prelims 16:02.90
  • Lauren Boyle (1500 National Record, Oceanic Record) Finals 15:44.71

Go Aussies! Break the silence here in Oz with some outstanding results.

Our dedicated swimmers should be the news not SA scandals.

Go Aussies! We’re following you on swim swam as there is limited coverage in Oz.

Hehe. SMH coverage – everyone is simply relieved Seebohm did not make a big tantrum .

Fraser Holmes ‘ is not where he wanted to be ‘ on coming last.

Oh dear. Well that is where he is & it is no different to 2010 2011 2012 . Are they in lalaland?

Then Seebohm admits she is not in form & thus put no pressure on herself & had the proverbial ‘fun’ out here.

Message – there it is all there for the Australian public . They are not stupid .

Message to Australian team.

Hope you are enjoying your European vacation with that stopover in quaint Barcelona. The pink hotel look fab.

Luckily for you no one knows you have even gone . It’s not as if you’ve made the news except for that Sprenger chap.

Signed

Disgusted of Turrumurra.

Really guys . 🙁

One of the most negative comments I have read on this site. Their performance so far is a little disappointing but it is by no means catastrophic or disgusting. There are still a lot of races to look forward to in which the Aussies can win. The 100m final should be fantastic.
