For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Emma Dalton of Mason, OH has announced her decision to swim for Vanderbilt University beginning in the 2021-2022 season. The backstroke specialist is a year-round swimmer for the Mason Manta Rays Swim Team and she is completing her final year at Mason High School.

I feel so beyond blessed to announce that I have committed to continue my academic and athletic careers at Vanderbilt!!! Thank you to my teammates, coaches, and family for helping me get to this point. I am so excited for the next four! ANCHOR DOWN!! 💛🖤💛

Dalton ended her high school swimming career with an Ohio High School Division I State title in the 100 back. She cruised to the wall 1.15 seconds ahead of silver medalist Carly Meeting of New Albany High School. She went a personal best time of 53.91. Dalton also swam the 50 free, touching 15th in a time of 24.12.

Finally, Dalton was a member of two of Mason High School’s relays at the state meet. She led off the 200 medley relay in a 50 back time of 25.66. Reese Lugbill was on breast, Kiara Anchrum was fly, and Tiana Anchrum anchored on the freestyle leg. The women were runner-up in the event, touching 0.11 seconds behind New Albany High School. Dalton swam the second leg of the 200 free relay (23.66), while Tiana led off, Emma Hartman swam third, and Kaira anchored. They finished 4th.

This was Dalton’s second Division I State appearance. Junior year she swam at the Division I meet, touching 23rd in the 100back and competing on two relays. She did not qualify for the State meet freshman or sophomore year.

Additionally, she has dropped over 3 seconds in the 100 back since February of 2020. In early-February 2020, Dalton went a best time of 57.17. Fast-forward to this year’s state meet where she touched at 53.91. Similarly, she has also dropped almost 3 seconds in a similar time frame in the 200 back, jumping from 2:07.11 in March of 2020 to 2:04.25 in March of 2021.

She is a 2021 Summer Juniors qualifier in the 100 back in both LCM and SCY.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 back – 25.63
  • 100 back – 53.91
  • 200 back – 2:04.02
  • 50 free – 23.91

Dalton will join the Commodores in the fall of 2021. Her top times would have made her the team’s fastest 100 backstroker this season and their fourth-fastest 200 backstroker. Her 100 back time would have earned her a spot in the C-final at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Women’s Championships.

Mercedes Traba, Kalia Utley, and Gray Almasi have already committed to swim for Vanderbilt’s class of 2025.
