Hassler Carroll of Kingfish Aquatic Club and Anderson High School has given his commitment to Virginia Tech. Carroll is a US Open qualifer in both the 200 and 400 freestyle, and should step in right away and contribute on the conference level for the Hokies:
-
200 freestyle- 1:39:51
-
500 freestyle- 4:26:03
-
200 butterfly- 1:54:06
-
400 IM- 3:59:18
- 200 freestyle LCM- 1:52.77
- 400 freestyle LCM- 3:58.77
Carroll would have just squeaked into the C-Final at last year’s ACC Championships in the 500 freestyle, although his summer performances indicate that Carroll is faster than his short course bests. The Hokies were one of the better middle distance programs in the country last year, finishing 15th in the 800 freestyle relays at NCAAs. They return two swimmers from that relay, seniors Michal Szuba and Lucas Bureau.
I had a feeling when visiting Virginia Tech this was the place for me. Competing in the ACC is going to be a great challenge in and out of the pool. The staff and swimmers there are dedicated to winning championships, and so am I.
Carroll was the Ohio State Division 1 Champion in the 500 freestyle as a sophomore in the 500 freestyle. He would finish third a year later, bested by Joshua McDonald of Lakota East and National Junior Teamer Mark Andrew of Middletown. He’ll join a Hokie squad looking to get back on top in the ACC after they finished third last year. The Hokies won in 2014 but were surpassed by fast rising NC State and conference newcomer Louisville.
