LAST TIME OUT

The Ohio State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams officially opened their 2019-20 season with a two-day dual meet against the Texas A&M Aggies Oct. 18-19. Ohio State’s men’s team battled Texas A&M to the final event before falling, 153-147, while Ohio State’s women were defeated by the Aggie women, 174-124.

The women were led by multi-event winner Molly Kowal, who took first in both the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyle events. Kristen Romano added a win in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.83, and the 400 free relay team of Amy Fulmer, Taylor Petrak, Lucija Jurkovic-Perisa and Freya Rayner also took first in 3:22.33.

The men’s team took a lead over the Aggies, 66-65, after the seventh event when Alex Dillmann and Noah Lense went one-two in the 200 fly in 1:47.52 and 1:47.64, respectively, with Chachi Gustafso taking fourth. The Aggies raced back, though, overtaking the Buckeye lead on the second-to-last event – the 200 individual medley – and then clinching the team victory with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

Divers Jackie Brenn and Genevieve Angerame each took second on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, respectively, two of six runner-up efforts for the Buckeyes. Lyle Yost finished first on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 377.33.

BIG HONORS FOR THE BUCKS

Men’s swimming, Paul DeLakis was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, conference officials announced Oct. 23. It was the first conference honor for the junior on the season and his second career nod, as he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in 2017. Against the Aggies, DeLakis was a double winner, taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:37.16) and the 500 freestyle (4:32.27).

SCOUTING THE HOKIES

The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are 1-0 this season as they defeated George Washington on both sides. The Hokie men claimed the 203-87 win while the women tallied 208-87 over the Colonials.

The men won 13 events in the meet and posted a 1-2-3 finish in both the 200 butterfly and 50 free. In the 200 fly, sophomore Antani Ivanov lead the way with a time of 1:45.37 while junior Thomas Hallock posted a time of 20.37 in the 50 free. The women also placed first in 13 events in the first meet of the season and turned in another two 1-2-3 finishes in the 100 back and 100 breast. Notably, freshmen Brooke Travis and Rose Pouch claimed first in the 100 free and 200 free.

The Hokies swept all the diving events against the Colonials with Teagan Moravek leading the way for the women and Noah Zawadzki finishing first for the men. Moravek put up a score of 317.40 on the 1-meter board while Zawadzki posted a top-5 program best on the 1-meter with a score of 375.68.

SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS

The Penn State men are 2-0 to open the season with team wins over St. Bonaventure and West Virginia. The Nittany Lion men defeated the Bonnies 192-145 in their season opener with a notable performance by senior captain, Austin Wilson who led the team with five top-two finishes, including event wins in both the 25 freestyle (9.69) and 200 free relay (1:24.10). Against West Virginia, the PSU men tallied 11 first-place finishes to top the Mountaineers, 167-125.

The women are also undefeated this season, going 3-0 against St. Bonaventure, West Virginia and Liberty. Notably, junior Carly Hart has posted five individual wins in four events including the 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. The women posted the largest win against the Bonnies with a score of 279-72.

On the boards, PSU sophomore Bryce Hoch won the 1-meter dive, earning a final score of 296.50, as well as winning the 3-meter dive against St. Bonaventure with a score of 303.15. Against the Mountaineers, Hoch placed first again on the 1-meter board with a score of 302.25.
