OHSAA Finalist Sydney Peterson to Swim at Catawba College Beginning Fall 2024

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sydney Peterson, a six-time Ohio state finalist, is set to swim at Catawba College and will be making the move to North Carolina to join the Indians this fall, where she also plans to study elementary education.

“I chose this school because of the coaches and how the team made me feel [so] at home with them,” Peterson said.

Peterson competed for Green High School’s swim team all four years, qualifying for the OHSAA’s Division I Swimming & Diving State Championships as early as her freshman year. A sprint butterflyer and freestyler, Peterson was a fixture on Green’s relays and made it back to the state finals, both on relays and individually, six times over the course of her high school career.

On the club side of the sport, Peterson is a member of Firestone Akron Swim Team. Her most recent short course yards competition was the Great Lakes Zone YMCA Championship, which saw Peterson win the 100 fly in a time of 56.95 in addition to taking second in the 100 free (53.64) and 200 fly (2:11.48).

Best Times (SCY)

  • 50 free – 24.77
  • 100 free – 53.29
  • 100 fly – 56.21

A Division II program, Catawba’s women’s team placed third at the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Championships back in February. With three heats going back for finals at the SAC championships, Peterson’s personal best times in the 50 and 100 free would have landed her in the ‘B’ final for both events.

Most notably, Peterson’s best time in the 100 fly (56.21) would have propelled her onto the podium as the 3rd-fastest time in the field, putting her in a strong position to be a key point-scorer for the Indians right from the start.

Peterson’s athletic endeavors were not limited to just the pool, as she also played volleyball throughout all four years of high school.

Gearing up for the 2024-2025 academic year and competitive season, it appears that Peterson will be joined by just two other incoming freshmen on the women’s swim team: Marleen Plachetka (mid/distance free) and Sophie Welborn (sprint free).
