Oklahoma Christian swimming coach Josh Davis has filled out his staff, announcing Wednesday that Chris Van Slooten and Adam Bowen will serve as assistant coaches.
Van Slooten has been the head coach of the American Energy Swim Club – arguably Oklahoma’s top swim club – since 2015. He spent time as a high school coach in Michigan in the 1990s before moving to Charlottesville, Va., where he coached at The Covenant School.
In 2009, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he coached at Holmes High School and served as an assistant coach at the Alamo Area Aquatics Association. He moved back to Virginia in 2012, becoming the aquatics director and head coach at Fork Union Military Academy.
“Chris has been a very successful coach at the club level and the high school level,” Davis said. “I’m so glad that OC will have his expertise and passion now at the collegiate level. Every team Chris has been on, he’s made it better and produced champions.
“More than that, he knows how to make winners outside the pool. Coach Van Slooten knows that swimming is simply a microcosm of life, a training cell to produce the next generation of leaders. Chris’ commitment to his family, character and excellence inspires me. I know it will inspire the swimmers at OC. I look forward to working together in this inaugural season of OC swimming.”
Bowen is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the National Council of Certified Personal trainers. He also is a fitness nutrition specialist through the NASM. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health and sports science from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in health care administration from Oklahoma City University.
He has worked in the local health and fitness industry for 10 years, with aquatics training as one of his specialties.
“Adam has been a personal trainer for more than 10 years and grew up swimming in Edmond,” Davis said. “He is the perfect addition to our staff to make our swimmers stronger and tougher.”

Editor’s note: a previous version of this press release said that van Sloot was an assistant at Virginia from 2000-2008. We have been unable to confirm that information, which includes Virginia having no record of it, so we have removed that clause.
