Old Dominion Adds Futures Qualifier Mallory MacKay To Class Of 2027

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mallory MacKay has announced her decision to continue her athletic and academic career at Old Dominion University, beginning with the upcoming 2023-2024 season. MacKay is wrapping up her senior year at Avon High School, located in Avon, Ohio and swims year-round with CLE Swimming.

Notably, MacKay was awarded a USA Swimming Foundation grant, which she used to organize and run free swim lessons to children in the Greater Cleveland community.

She shared her commitment on Instagram:

MacKay specializes in mid distance freestyle and backstroke, and owns a Futures qualifying time in the 200 backstroke. She most recently competed at the Lake Erie Senior Championships, where she earned her highest finish at 3rd in the 200 backstroke (2:05.19). Additionally, MacKay set a lifetime best by nearly four seconds in the 200 IM to post a 2:10.76 and take 6th.

In February at the NW District Championships, MacKay won the 500 free in a best time of 5:10.30. She was also runner-up in the 200 freestyle with a best time of 1:54.39, punching her ticket to the Ohio High School State Championship meet in both events. At the state meet, she took 24th in the 200 free (1:56.23) and 30th in the 500 (5:19.15).

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 free – 53.30
  • 200 free – 1:54.39
  • 500 free – 5:10.30
  • 100 back – 58.94
  • 200 back – 2:04.80

Old Dominion is a Division I mid-major program that recently completed their first year in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Administration (CCSA). At this season’s CCSA Championships, Old Dominion finished 8th out of 11 teams. MacKay is less than a second off what it took to score in the 200 backstroke this year, as a 2:03.23 advanced to the C-final.  She’s also just off in the 200 free, where a 1:53.22 was needed to make it back this year.

Cara O’Toole and Summer Sampson led the way for the Monarchs in the 200 backstroke this year. O’Toole took 11th at the CCSA Championships with a best time of 2:00.48, while Sampson finished 23rd with a 2:04.58 in finals. O’Toole will still be on campus when MacKay arrives, which should build up the backstroke depth for Old Dominion.

With her commitment, MacKay joins Ally Hilbrich, Lauren Masters, and Sophia Kapla in Old Dominion’s incoming class. Hilbirch, a Texas native, also swims backstroke and owns best times of 56.88 and 2:03.44 in the 100/200 back. Masters and Kapla both specialize in freestyle.
