Oldest High school Invite: Woodson Invitational Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Pine Crest Swim Team held their annual Woodson invitational today, which marked its 50th anniversary. The meet took place at Pine Crest school, which is located in the Fort Laurderdale, Florida where the meet is held every year.

The Woodson Invitational attracts many of the best high school swim teams in the country which includes Bolles High School. Bolles is known for its excellent swim team which was started by none other than Ryan Lochte’s coach: Gregg Troy. Bolles’ famous program has many big names such as Anthony Nesty who just celebrated the 25th anniversary of winning the gold in the 100m fly at the Seoul Olympics for Suriname over American Matt Biondi. The Bolles swim team lived up to their excellence today, dominating the prelims session of the high school invitational.

Out of the 16 prelim events swum this morning, Bolles swimmers headed into the finals with the top seed in six events, sending at least one swimmer into every single final.

The prelims started off with St. Andrews School’s (another team that was making some waves this morning) Megan Moroney who swam a 1:51.61 in the 200 yard free. Megan later on took the top seed in the 100 yard fly as well with a 56.80. Moroney’s teammate, Rachael Bradford-Feldman went into finals with two top seeds as well with a 2:07.02 in the 200 yard IM and a 1:06.60 in the 100 yard breast. On the men’s side St. Andrews swimmer Zach Moses finished in a 1:01.78 in his 100 yard breast to send him into finals in the top spot.

Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling broke the 100m fly Singaporean national record twice in one day last year at the Charlotte Ultraswim. He’s also the American National High School Record holder. This year, Schooling is starting off his season well heading into finals with two top seeds in the 200 yard IM (1:56.50) and his specialty the 100 yard fly (50.68). Heading into finals behind Schooling was Joey Carbone swimming out of Bolles as well. Carbone swam a 51.80 this morning to finish behind Schooling. Carbone (16) swam for the Baylor School in Tennessee last year – another prestigious prep school – and is now at Bolles, training with national record holder Schooling.

Gage Kohner showed his strength this morning. Kohner swam took the top seed in both of the men’s freestyle sprint events, grabbing the top spot in the 50 yard free with a 21.48 and the 100 with a 46.74.

The women’s freestyle sprint events were both won by the same swimmer as well with Bolles swimmer Kasey Schmidt. Schmidt swam a fast 24.04 to get the top spot over a fast field with a 24.04 and had an easier time getting to the wall with the fastest time in the 100 with a 52.44.

The finals results have not been released yet but judging by this mornings prelims, St. Andrews and Bolles school had quite the battle in the pool.

I couldn’t believe the level of talent here in south Florida after moving here from a big competitive swimming city of charlotte North Carolina. This is how champions are made.
