The Texas Invite wrapped up its short course yards competition already this weekend, and today the Longhorns hosted the long course time trial for swimmers to get some racing in the long pool.
Paige Kremer won both the 50 and 100 free events, dipping below OT cuts in both races (though the Canadian won’t be too concerned with American Trials). She swam a 25.68 in the 50, as her teammate Annie Ochitwa (25.81), Wisconsin’s Chase Kinney (25.85) and USCB’s Lauren Vosseler (26.09) also earned OT cuts. Kremer returned to post a very strong 55.71 in the 100.
BYU’s Payton Sorenson owned the men’s 50 free with a 22.83, the only swimmer under 23 seconds. In the 100 free, it was Zona’s Renny Richmond (50.32), who along with Wisconsin’s Cannon Clifton (50.52) swam within OT qualification standards.
Wisconsin got wins in both 100 backstrokes, as Australian freshman Jessica Unicomb took the women’s race (1:03.17) and Austin Byrd dipped under the OT cut with his 56.51.
Meanwhile, Arizona swept the 100 breaststroke and 200 free, with Sara Borendame (1:10.21) winning the women’s 100 breast race and Gage Crosby taking the men’s (1:01.34), both swimmers easily surpassing the OT cut. In the 200, Wildcats Ricky Maestri (1:50.61), Chris Wieser (1:50.78), and Daniela Georges (2:02.34) all earned OT cuts.
The Wildcats, who impressed this weekend in the short course pool, pieced together a host of other event wins and OT cuts. In the men’s 400 free, Ty Fowler‘s 3:58.25 cleared the Trials standard as he was the only swimmer under 4 minutes in the race. Thane Maudslien‘s 2:03.28 in the 200 back was good enough for a win and an OT cut in that event, while Nick Hogsed took the mile in 15:41.44.
Other OT cuts and event winners came from UCLAs Arlyn Upshaw in the 200 IM (2:18.14), UCSB’s Chris Nolan in the 200 fly (2:01.70), and Wisconsin’s Dana Grindall in the 100 fly (1:00.17).
