The Ohio State University Buckeyes reached out of state to get a commitment from Antonio Ramirez of Arizona Gold Swimming. Ramirez will have an immediate impact for the Buckeyes in both distance and IM:

  • 500 freestyle- 4:27.60
  • 1000 freestyle- 9:05.01
  • 1650 freestyle- 15:19.14
  • 400 IM- 3:53.53
  • 200 breaststroke- 2:01.68

Those times mean that Ramirez already has a potential scoring swim at the B1G Championship. His 1650 freestyle would have placed him 13th at the 2015 meet. The Buckeyes had just one scorer, sophomore Brayden Seal, in that event.  Ramirez’s 400 IM also would have made a (non-scoring) C-Final at the meet.

Ramirez earned his Olympic Trials qualifying time this past summer when he finished 3rd at the Speed Junior National Championships in the 400 IM (4:25.11). While Ramirez hails from Arizona, he has Ohio state in his roots:

“Ultimately though, it was the connection I felt with the coaching staff and swimmers. I feel that OSU offers me the best opportunity to succeed as a student-athlete. I was born into a Buckeye family and am so proud to have the upcoming opportunity to represent Ohio State in the water”

Ramirez most recently finished runner-up at the 2015 Arizona State Swimming and Diving Championship in the 200 IM. He also finished second in the 100 breaststroke for Arcadia High School.

Although he could start in the fall of 2016, Ramirez has actually committed to start in Fall 2017. He will move to Columbus and train at Ohio State Swim Club in the interim.
