Omaha Mavericks Defeat Midland, Sweeping Almost Every Event

FREMONT, Neb. – The Mavericks opened 2022 action with a meet at Midland Friday night. Omaha swept the top spot in nearly every single event to start the year out strong.

“It was great to get back in the pool following our winter break,” said head coach Todd Samland. “Tonight gave us a chance to loosen up and compete again before we head into a few conference meets. I am happy with what I saw from both teams and look forward to seeing them compete again next weekend at South Dakota.”

Gracie Streblow, Annie Leinart, Hailey Matthews, and Payton Easley started the night out with first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:48.66. A team of Isaac Fletcher, Logan Kempf, Kody Hollingsworth, and Grant Waszak followed suit for the men with a time of 1:35.28.

Rylee Trojan then led the Maverick women to first in the 1650-free event swimming a time of 18:13.87. Nick Walkley picked up first for the men with a time of 17:10.29.

In the 200-free, Streblow and Caleb Miller clinched the top spots. Streblow swam a time of 1:59.28, while Miller finished in 1:44.12.

Abigail Mitchell added her name to the first-place list in the 100-back swimming a time of 1:00.65. Fletcher earned his second of the night with a time of 54.36 in the 100-back on the men’s side.

Leinart tallied a first-place finish in the 100-breast with a time of 1:08.10, while Brandon Cheong placed second with a time of 1:00.20.

In the 200-fly, Sadie Khalil swam a time of 2:16.17, which was good enough for first. Pharis Musleh was tabbed second following a time of 2:02.51.

Matthews added her name to the mix with a first-place finish in the 50-free. She swam a time of 24.81. Hollingsworth earned first in the same even with a time of 20.65 for the men.

Parker Hagemann added another first for Omaha in the 100-free swimming a time of 55.48, while Owen Hoak did the same for the Maverick men swimming a time of 47.77.

Streblow picked up her third first-place finish on the night in the 200-back with a time of 2:09.14. Fletched tallied his third in the 200-back for the men with a time of 1:59.37.

Payton Krug was Omaha’s lone placer in the 200-breast. She finished first swimming a time of 2:33.73. Daniel Young swam a time of 2:06.07 in the same event for first.

In the 500-free, Easley recorded first with a time of 5:32.02. Musleh tallied another second-place finish on the night with a time of 4:51.17.

Matthews and Hollingsworth led the team to first in the 100-fly. Matthews swam a time of 58.06, while Hollingsworth posted a time of 49.97.

In the 400-IM, Omaha saw first from Leinart with a time of 4:45.66 and Drake Nielsen with a time of 4:27.69.

Omaha’s final first-place finishes came in the 400-free relay. Streblow, Annika Harthoorn, Trojan, and Matthews swam a time of 3:37.46 for the women. Hoak, Elijah Clements, Waszak, and Hollingsworth posted a time of 3:09.49 for the men.

The Mavericks had to cancelled Saturday’s home meet vs. Midland due to COVID-19 protocols. They return to action on Friday, January 21 at South Dakota. The meet is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Vermillion.
