Ontario Junior International To Feature Penny Oleksiak

ONTARIO JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL

The Ontario Junior International will take place this weekend Friday through Sunday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, home of the 2015 Pan American Games and currently the high performance centre – Ontario.

Featured in the meet will be both four-time Olympic medallist Penny Oleksiak and her new HPC – Ontario training partner Rebecca Smith. Both have broken several age group records during their careers, the former breaking plenty of senior Canadian records, and an Olympic record last season.

Also attending the meet will be both a British and Scottish squad.

Oleksiak is only entered in the 200m butterfly, an event that she usually swims periodically throughout the season, but has yet to test it out internationally.

She’s the top seed in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.06 (short course meters). Emily Large, who’s part of the British squad attending the meet, will be her closest competitor. With an entry time of 2:10.54, she’s just about two and a half seconds behind her on the psych sheet.

Oleksiak is coming off the short course world championships in Windsor last weekend where she was a staple on the Canadian relays and took home an individual bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle.

Smith is fresh and swimming a full schedule here in Toronto. She’s the second overall seed in the 200m freestyle behind Molly Gowans of Island Swimming, fourth overall in the 100m butterfly, second in the 50 free behind HPC – Ontario teammate Kayla Sanchez, 12th in the 50m butterfly, and first in her premier event, the 100m freestyle.

Both Smith and Sanchez are new to the HPC – Ontario this season.

Live results for the meet can be found here.

No kidding. And then there were three.

Another 16-year old Cdn shredding it in the 200m free.

Rebecca Smith 1:52.99 in the 200m free (short course metres). This would’ve been a World Junior World Record, but for Taylor Ruck swimming 1:52.5 at short-course worlds last week. Smith’s time is also notably quicker than the PBs of Katrine Savard (1:54.21) and Kennedy Goss (1:55.97), who combined with Ruck and Oleksiak to win gold in the 4×200 free relay at Windsor (and was within a second or so of the WR).

The Canadian 4×200 free relay is shaping up nice for 2017 and beyond.

Absolutely impressive!!!
And we can add the other fantastic performance from 15 year-old Kayla Sanchez to have a Canadian dream team towards Tokyo2020.
And what about the women 400 im??
Swimswam, great news from Canada (and GB too, considering Emily Large, Freya Anderson and so on).

Penny Oleksiak did compete in the 200m IM in the Australian Age Group in 2015, where she won gold. I found a livestream of it on YouTube and it was impressive. She won the butterfly length (no surprise considering she won gold in both 100m and 200m butterfly there), but actually fell into 8th place during the breast stroke length, 2 seconds behind first. Somehow in the 50m of freestyle, she went from 8th to first, more than half a second ahead of second. Even back then she was amazing at catching up at the end.

Not sure if she’s going to even try to compete in the 400 im though.

Of course in the medley relay, in both Rio… Read more »
