Ontario Record Highlights Day One At Canadian Age Group Championships

The Canadian Age Group Championships in Quebec City, Quebec began today, already showcasing some of Canada’s top young swimmers.

In the first final of the night, Lauren Wright from Mississauga broke her own Ontario record on the way to taking home gold in the girls 12&under 100m fly final. Touching in at 1:04.28, the was faster than her previous provincial record of 1:04.40.

Shortly after in the women’s 200m backstroke Meryn McCann threw down a very solid 2:11.20 to win the girls 16-18 final. That time stands as a new personal best for her, bettering the 2:11.61 she swam at the 2015 Age Group International.

McCann won the final by over three full seconds. With her current time the 16-year-old is the fourth fastest Canadian this season in the event.

Etobicoke’s winning ways didn’t stop there as Richie Stokes built himself an incredible lead in the 14-year-olds 200m backstroke final in order to claim gold with a 2:06.90.

Stokes won by a sizable amount; his closest competitor was Dylan Byers representing the Greater Ottawa Kingfish and he finished in 2:11.03.

Etobicoke kept things rolling as Olivia Anderson won the 1500m freestyle with a time of 16:44.50. She will be representing team Canada at the World Junior Championships later this season.
