Here in the northern hemisphere we are well into the fall season and winter is on the horizon, yet this does not mean all open water swimmers have hung up their suits until the warmer months return. For some, swimming in the cooler, if not cold, water is a big part of the thrill of open water swimming. Here in Southern California there are still lots of swimmers hitting the pacific ocean at places like the La Jolla Cove, Laguna Beach and Santa Monica.

Regardless of where you swim a few standard principles should be followed when swimming in cooler water.

First, just like any open water swim, know your limits. Swimming in cooler water can shock the system and potentially lead to cardiac arrest.  Acclimatizing your body to cooler water is key.  Jumping into cool/cold water can be very dangerous.

Know the weather forecast.  Changes in the weather can obviously impact the water conditions and you don’t want to find yourself in the midst of dangerous water conditions half way through your swim.

Swim with group and in lifeguarded water.  With the popularity of the open water swimming growing there are more and more groups heading out together year round.  Have a plan to swim with one another or join up with a group.  Some swimmers may enlist the support of a kayaker to guide them and ensure their safety.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a wetsuit. Today’s swimming wetsuits are very sophisticated and allow a wide range of motion in the arms and shoulders. Don’t feel compelled to ‘skin it’ if the water is too cold for you. Depending upon where you swim, wearing a wetsuit can extend your open water swimming year round.

Swimming in the open water during the fall, winter and spring months can be a great experience.  Ultimately it comes down to preparation and safety.  Use common sense and in the end if you don’t think you’re ready for a particular swim then sit it out and better prepare yourself to handle the conditions that match your ability.
