The Orange Coast Pirates came away with a sweep of the men’s and women’s team titles at the California Community College Championships over the weekend, becoming the first team to win the double in five years.
The women had a dominant showing, winning the title by 128.5 points, while the men edged out Sierra by just 15.5 points, clinching the title in the last relay.
“Everyone kept telling me, hey you got it, and I’m sitting there seeing Sierra in the standings right with us,” said Orange Coast aquatics coach Anthony Iacopetti. “I was nervous all weekend, and it wasn’t until we had a big score in the 100 freestyle that I felt we were finally in a position to win it.”
Brandon Crabtree of San Diego Mesa won his second Swimmer of the Year award, claiming three individual titles in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, setting State Records in the latter two. He shared the award with Hayden Hemmens of Orange Coast, who also won three events in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 back.
For the women it was freshman Ashley Tse of Mt. San Antonio earning Swimmer of the Year honors with three event wins herself, winning the 200 IM, 100 back and 200 breast, setting a State Record in the 200 breast.
The Orange Coast relays proved to be crucial, as the women won four of five and the men won all five, which it turned out they needed in order to come away with the title.
