OSU Hosts Stanford Friday for Pac-12 Duel Meet

The Oregon State swim team will stay in Corvallis this week and face Stanford this Friday in a Pac-12 meet starting at 2 p.m., at the Osborn Aquatic Center.

Limited tickets for Friday’s meet are on sale now and can be purchased HERE.

“Every week the team is getting better and we are learning from every race,” said head coach Jennifer Buffin. The expectation this season is to embrace the process and to evaluate week to week and seeing how we can improve our skills through training and race strategies.”

Oregon State opened its Pac-12 Conference schedule last week, suffering a loss to California in its home opener, 163-88. The Beavers placed second in the majority of the events, including standout freshman, Felicia Anderson who continued her success recording a career-best in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.98 to place third. Anderson later placed well in the 200-yard backstroke and set a new high with a time of 2:04.22 on her way to a second-place finish.

The Stanford swimming team will begin its 2016-17 campaign this Friday after finishing a perfect 7-0 in dual meets and second at the NCAA Championships a season ago. Stanford returns seven of its 10 All-Americans from last season, including five of six individual national champions. In addition, Olympians Simone Manuel and Kassidy Cook return to the team. Stanford added one of the top-ranked recruiting class, which includes standout Olympian, Katie Ledecky.

Stanford is a great program and is coming off an incredible Olympic year,” continued Buffin. “This is a great opportunity for our program to be create an environment that is best for us to be successful. Last week we held our first home meet and the environment was competitive and fun. I expect we are going to have a larger community turnout this week, which will make it exciting for both teams.”

The Beavers will go head-to-head with the Cardinal for the first time since the 2014-15 season, when Stanford recorded a 134-117 victory in Stanford, California. OSU is 0-4 against the Cardinal, suffering losses in 2014, ’13, ’09 and ’07.

Oregon State will hit the road next weekend as it heads to Westwood, California for the annual Pink Meet where the Beavers will face UCLA, UC-Santa Barbra and San Diego.

Interesting that OSU is charging for admission. I’ve been to dual meets hosted at all other Pac 12 swim schools except WSU and can not recall ever being charged to watch, even meets with multiple Olympians and more than a thousand people in attendance. Sometimes voluntary donations designated for charity have been collected . No objection on my part – just assumed this practice was a mutual courtesy among the schools.

The NCAA is always touting the “student athlete” obliviously OSU seems to have it backwards. Charging admission for a college dual meet is the perfect illustration of OSU, the PAC-12 and the NCAA exploiting Katie’s, Simone’s & Lia’s, accomplishments as athletes at the Rio Olympics because they are students. OSU should donate all the admission proceeds to a charity selected by Katie, Simone and Lia or the swimmers should consider protesting OSU’s attempt to profit off their accomplishments by not swimming.

Before conclusions are drawn, maybe there should be a statement from the Athletic Department on why there’s admission and where the money will go. Perhaps it is going to go to the community. But that will never be known unless the questions are asked. Blaming the NCAA, the University, or PAC 12 is an easy scape goat. Before you throw out the protest option, maybe you need to get the facts.
