PA State And YMCA National Champ Becca Luft Gives Verbal To Ohio State

Sprint freestyle and flyer Becca Luft of the Hershey Aquatic Club has verbally committed to Ohio State University.

Last season, Luft competed in the 2015 YMCA Short Course National Championships. There she teamed up with Courtney Harnish, Emily Ilgenfritz, and Megan Small to take second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.48; Becca split 23.66. In her sophomore year (while overcoming a shoulder injury), she became a Pennsylvania high school class AA state champion in the 100 fly, posting a 54.91. That year, she also was crowned 2014 YMCA long course national champion in the 400 medley relay alongside Kacey Oberlander, Megan Hunt, and Ilgenfritz clocking in at 4:19.83; she swam the 100 meter free in 57.16. Here are her fastest times in SCY:

  • 50 FR: 23.93
  • 100 FR: 51.32
  • 200 FR: 1:54.20
  • 100 FL: 54.91
  • 200 FL: 2:14.89

Last season the Buckeye team, led by coach Bill Dorenkott, took sixth place at Big 10 Championships. Luft’s 100 fly time would have placed her just outside the bonus final last year, so that would make a good goal for her going into next season.

“I chose Ohio State because from the time I arrived on campus to the time I got home I felt at home,” she said. “I fell in love with not only the team, coaches, and facilities, but the academic side of the school as well.”

Luft will be joining her current Hershey Aquatic Club teammate Jack Kushner in committing to the Buckeyes, along with Katie Wright, Molly Kowal, Marianne Kahmann, Andrew Loy, and Reilly Shields in what is shaping up to be a solid recruiting class.
