California breaststroker Jonathan Pun has verbally committed to University of the Pacific for the 2014 season, giving the Tigers an immediate upgrade to its breaststroking corps and a solid option for its medley relays.
Pun swims out of Davis, California with the Davis Aquadarts and Davis High School. He’s the rare breaststroker who is equally strong in all three distances (200, 100, and 50) coming out of high school.
Pun’s Top Times
100 Breast: 56.49
200 Breast: 2:03.41
50 Breast (flat start): 26.49
100 Fly: 52.83
50 Free: 21.73
Certainly Pun’s short speed should make him a candidate for Pacific’s medley relays at some point in his career, and his 200 time would have made him the Tigers’ top option and only point-scorer in the 200 breast last season. Pun also has the speed to help out in the 50 free, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can develop into a dominant relay piece on freestyle relays as well as medleys.
Pun will swim one year with current junior Cameron Franke, who had a good season last year, most notably turning in big-time splits on both of Pacific’s medley relays at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in February. Pacific will hope to team Franke and Pun together for a season before handing the reins fully to Pun in 2015.
