Pair of Plano West Sophomores Produce Top-5 Times at North Texas Dual Champs

A pair of Plano West sophomores produced national top-5 ranked performances at the North Texas Dual Meet Championships at the FISD Natatorium in Frisco, TX on November 13th.

Josemaria Romero swam a time of 48.44 in the 100 fly, having entered the meet with a seed time of 49.41. Romero’s 48.44 ranks him 5th in the United States this year in the 15-16 age group, and would have finished third at the last edition of the 6A Texas state championship meet.

Another Plano West sophomore, Watson Nguyen, clocked in at 54.86 in the 100 breast. His best time going into the meet was 56.59.

Nguyen is only the third swimmer in the 15-16 age group to break 55 this season, the other two being Douglas County Stingrays’ Jonathan Hardnett (52.19) and Ames Cyclone’s Joshua Chen (54.40).

Nguyen won his event by nearly 3 seconds, splitting 25.83/29.03. Nguyen’s time would have been faster than anybody went at either Texas state championship meet last season. Nguyen has dropped almost 5 seconds from his best time from 2020 so far this season.

Plano West is 6a, so times good enough to win 5a don’t really matter. Saw both of them and they were great swims.
