Aussie Lani Pallister already scored big here in Budapest by claiming the 800m freestyle gold in a new World Junior Championships meet record. But, the 17-year-old athlete was back for more in tonight’s 400m freestyle final, with the teen firing off a new monster personal best of 4:05.42 to get the job done in golden style.

Pallister’s previous personal best in this 400m free entering these Champinsps was the 4:06.57 she established at the Aussie World Trials earlier this year. That rendered the Cotton Tree athlete 3rd there in Brisbane among a stacked field, finishing behind eventual World Champion Ariarne Titmus and Kiah Melverton.

Tonight, Pallister dropped well over a second to top the podium, overtaking the World Junior Championships Record in the process. The previous record-holder was another Aussie, 2016 Rio Olympian Tasmin Cook, who set the mark at 4:06.17 back in 2015.

In terms of Aussie swimming history, Pallister’s 4:05.42 performance now ranks her as the 3rd fastest 17-year-old female ever from her nation, sitting only behind Titmus’ 3:59.66 from 2018 and Cook’s 4:04.36 from 2016.

For all ages, Pallister is now the 8th fastest Aussie performer ever in this 400m free event.

Pallister’s time pushes her into the top 10 ever for an Australian women (7th). She pushed Tracey Wickham out of the top 10, who swam 4.06.28 as a 16 year old in 1978, yes 1978, 40 years ago. What an amazing swimmer Wickham was.
