China’s Pan Zhanle swam to a new Olympic Record in the men’s 100 freestyle as he split a 46.92 in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay last night. He broke the record of a 47.02 that Caeleb Dressel swam to win gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Split Comparison
Pan | Dressel | |
50 | 22.56 | 22.39 |
100 | 24.36 | 24.63 |
46.92 | 47.02 |
Pan stands as the current World Record holder in the event after posting a 46.80 this past February at the 2024 World Championships. He notably also swam that record during a lead-off split for the Chinese men’s 4×100 free relay.
Pan is one of the favorites in the event, along with former World Record holder in the 100 David Popovici of Romania and Kyle Chalmers the 2016 Rio Champion of Australia. Dressel will not have the opportunity to defend his title as he was 3rd in the event at US Olympic Trials.
TOP 5 ALL-TIME FASTEST MEN’S 100 LCM FREE PERFORMANCES
- Pan Zhanle, China, 46.80 (2024)
- David Popovici, Romania, 46.86 (2022)
- David Popovici, Romania, 46.88 (2024)
- Cesar Cielo, Brazil, 46.91 (2009)
- Pan Zhanle, China, 46.92 (2024)
Pan vs. Popovici at the peak of their powers will feed families
Because people were complaining article about pan And his lead off swim 🤣
Incredible lunge forward on each stroke, yet rides so low to the water. Fascinating seeing the different free techniques.
Olympian’s strokes are so beautiful, when you see them (or any elite swimmer) swim in person it’s just…AMAZING
The thing about Pan’s 100 free is that the strategy looks to vary every time and it seems like he’s still trying to figure out the “perfect equilibrium.”
His sub-47 swims:
22.45/24.52 = 46.97
22.26/24.54 = 46.80
22.60/24.37 = 46.97
22.56/24.36 = 46.92
Screw the equilibrium. We need to see him go out in 21
Steinway may be paying a visit in that case lol
