Panthers Kick Off Year With Victory At FIU Sprint Invite

MIAMI – The FIU Swimming and Diving program opened up the calendar year, taking home first place in the FIU Sprint Invite with a total of 636 points Wednesday morning from Biscayne Bay Campus.

The Panthers shined in the 50-yard sprint competitions, earning three finals spots including a victory in the 50-breaststroke. FIU rolled into the traditional race format, pulling away with four first-place finishes

The meet started with the first round of the 50-yard sprint races. In this format the top eight in the first round advance to the second round, the top four in the second round advance to the semifinals and the top two move on to the finals for a head-to-head race.

Christie Chue had a solid day in the pool, racking up three first-place finishes in the 50-breast (29.12), 100-free (53.37), and 100-breast (1:05.25), while notching a top three placement in the 100-IM (1:00.04).

Freshman Diana Santamaria earned a pair of finals spots in 50-back, placing second (26.84) and took third in the 50-butterfly (26.47). Oumy Diop came up to second place (25.96) in the 50-butterfly.

In the 100-yard races, Nicole Frank placed in the top four three times on Wednesday including a second-place finish in the 100-IM (59.98). The sophomore marked a third-place finish in the 100-backstroke (59.97), while placing fourth in the 100-breaststroke (1:08.31).

Jordan Browning and Gabrielle Puryear-Lynch each netted first-place individually as Browning took home first in the 100-backstroke (59.55) and Puryear-Lynch earned the top spot for the 100-butterfly (58.32).

On the diving side, graduate student Paige Burrell swept both the 1-mtr and 3-mtr on the morning, scoring a 295.95 on the 1-mtr. She followed up with 327.55 on the 3-mtr.

Ruska Lehtonen earned two top three finishes, placing second on the 3-mtr for a score of 271.60 and third on the 1-mtr (260.65). Mikaela Starr saw a fifth-place finish on the 1-mtr (234.30).
