The Pitt swimming & diving teams face another Atlantic Coast Conference challenge when the Panthers travel to compete against Virginia on Friday for their second meet of the year.
Friday’s Pitt at Virginia meet will begin with diving at 1 p.m. and continue with swimming events starting at around 4 p.m. at the Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va.
The Pitt women (2-0, 2-0 ACC) got off to the perfect start to the 2016-17 season with victories over Georgia Tech and Boston College on Oct. 8. But Virginia (0-0, 0-0 ACC), winners of nine consecutive ACC women’s swimming & diving team championships, presents one of the toughest challenges of the season for the Panthers, according to Pitt head coach John Hargis.
“On the women’s side, Virginia has not only set the standard in the ACC for several years but they’re consistently one of the best teams in the entire NCAA,” Hargis said. “This will be a great opportunity for our women to compete against national-caliber athletes and see where we stand. I was very happy with our women in the first meet of the season, and I’m looking forward to see how they do on Friday.”
The Pitt men’s team (1-1, 1-1 ACC) defeated Boston College but lost to Georgia Tech to open the campaign and will aim to challenge a Virginia men’s team that finished in the top half of the conference last year.
“Virginia has also traditionally had one of the best men’s programs in the ACC,” Hargis added. “For our men, we need to show improvement from our first meet in order to compete against another solid team.”
Pitt and Virginia will compete against each other in the pool for the second time as members of the ACC. In February 2014, the Cavaliers defeated the Panthers in both men’s and women’s dual meets.
