Several more Canadian Para Records fell on night 5 of the 2023 Canadian Swimming Championships, complementing an array of fast swims so far.
19-year-old Tyson Jacob threw down a new Canadian Swimming Para Record in the men’s 50 butterfly for the S5 class, swimming a time of 42.21. With his swim, he broke his own record of 43.89 that was set back in May of this year. He finished second in the event to winner Sebastian Massabie, who swam a time of 40.51 out of the S6 class.
Myriam Soliman won the women’s race out of the S7 class with a final time of 41.98. The Canadian Record stands at a 32.99 from Danielle Dorris back in 2021.
In the men’s 100 butterfly, Caleb Arndt set a new S13 Ontario Provincial Record in both the heats and finals. In the heats he posted a time of 1:08.38 to take the 7th seed for the final. He then followed that up with a 1:07.94 in the finals to re-break his record. Reid Maxwell won the final in a time of 1:07.74, swimming out of the S9 class.
Both Laon Kim and Timothe Barbeau set new Provincial records in the boy’s 15-17 800 freestyle. Kim, who led off the University of Calgary Swim Club’s National Age Group Record-breaking 400 freestyle relay, won the event in the 14-15 age-group with a time of 8:18.07. With his time, he set a new Alberta Provincial Age Group Record for 15-year-olds. Barbeau set a new Quebec Provincial Age Group Record en route to winning the event in the 16-18 year-old age group, swimming a time of 8:08.88 to win the event by nearly 3 seconds.
Like Barbeau did on the men’s side, 16-year-old Laila Oravsky posted a win in the girl’s 15-17 800 freestyle with a time of 8:52.67, taking the win by nearly 3 seconds. Behind her, 15-year-old Maxine Clark dropped a 8:55.56 for second place.
Kamryn Cannings dropped a sub-1:00 time in the girl’s 100 butterfly to claim the top spot in the 15-17 age group. Her time of 59.15 won the event by over a second and was the second-fastest time of the day, only behind Rebecca Smith‘s time of 58.72 that won the open event.
Another strong performance came in the boy’s 16-18 100 butterfly, where Filip Senc-Samardzic touched in a time of 53.29. His time was also the second-fastest of the day, only behind open division winner Keir Ogilvie, who went a 53.28.
