Races to watch: Day 2, Friday, September 9

S7 Women’s 50m freestyle

Team USA’s Cortney Jordan and McKenzie Coan will be back in the pool for this race. Coan is currently ranked 1 in the world, closely followed by Jordan. 2015 World Champion, Ani Palian of Russia, is not eligible to compete and the London Paralympic champion, Jacqueline Freney of Australia, is not competing in Rio.

S10 Men’s 100m freestyle

Andre Brasil, of Brazil, will have his first chance at a medal and opportunity to defend his London 2012 win. He is the 2015 world champion in this event, but Brazilian teammate Pheilipe Rodrigues is tired of taking second to Brasil. There will be plenty of noise from the stands on this night with two Brazilians in the pool. Andrew Pasterfield of Australia, who took bronze in London, will have to battle former Ukrainian able bodied National Team member, Denys Dubrov. Dubrov burst on the Paralympic scene in 2015 and has been inching closer to his able bodied times ever since.

S10 Women’s 100m freestyle

Sophie Pascoe of New Zealand is the reigning London Paralympic champion and world champion. Canada’s Aurelie Rivard was second to Sophie last year at IPC World Championships and is within striking distance.

S8 Women’s 100m butterfly

You have to go back to 2004 in Athens to find someone other than Team USA’s Jessica Long winning Paralympic gold in this event. Jessica prevailed in the last world class battle and is also the reigning world champion, but Stephanie Slater of Great Britain currently owns the world record and is ranked number 1 in the world. Slater should not underestimate Jessica Long because she has the best stroke in the pool and will surely swim her heart out. Kataryna Istomia of Ukraine hopes to be a spoiler. She is ranked second in the world and won silver at the IPC World Championships in 2016.
